Wayne Rooney<\/a> believes Manchester United<\/a>\u2019s current squad depth is \u2018not sustainable<\/a>\u2019 and has urged the club to strengthen Ruben Amorim<\/a>\u2019s side in the January transfer window.<\/p>\n United have moved into sixth in the Premier League<\/a> after their 1-0 victory at home to Newcastle United<\/a> on Boxing Day.<\/p>\n Ruben Amorim was missing several key figures for the game against Newcastle with Bruno Fernandes, Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo, Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire all absent, while five academy players were on the bench.<\/p>\n Jack Fletcher, son of former United midfielder Darren Fletcher, and Tyler Fredricson both featured in the second half against Newcastle as Amorim\u2019s side were forced to survive an onslaught from Newcstle.<\/p>\n United are looking to sign a new central midfielder with Elliot Anderson, Carlos Baleba and Adam Wharton all on the club\u2019s shortlist<\/a>, and Rooney feels his former side need to provide Amorim with more options in the upcoming window.<\/p>\n \t\t\t\tGet personalised updates on Manchester United every day\t\t\t<\/p>\n Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro\u2019s Football Newsletter. <\/p>\n Sign up to our newsletter<\/a> and then select your team in the link so we can send you football news tailored to you. <\/p>\n \u2018I was worried when I saw the performance, if I\u2019m honest,\u2019 Rooney said on BBC<\/a>\u2019s Match of the Day<\/a> when asked about United\u2019s win over Newcastle.<\/p>\n \t\t \u2018The manager changed the formation and went with a back four, which a lot of people have been asking for, I know they didn\u2019t concede a goal but they didn\u2019t look comfortable and Newcastle<\/a> were putting them under pressure, especially in the second half.<\/p>\n \u2018When I look at the squad and the bench, what they\u2019ve got there, they really need players in to try to help them challenge to get into the top four.<\/p>\n \u2018Listen, it\u2019s great to see the young players on the bench and getting opportunities but it needs to be at the right time as well, and it\u2019s not, it\u2019s not sustainable at all. They need players in.<\/p>\n \u2018They\u2019ve obviously lost some important players and Bruno [Fernandes] is a big loss but the home games under Amorim, you look at the possession from the Newcastle game, 33 per cent at Old Trafford<\/a>, I know when the fans go to that stadium they want to see the team with the ball, they want to see them entertaining, getting crosses in the box and getting shots in.
