It established Stephen Graham as one of the UK\u2019s finest acting exports, burnished the credentials of prolific writer Jack Thorne, and birthed a breakout star in the shape of Owen Cooper.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tAdolescence went on to <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/09\/adolescence-emmy-2025-outstanding-limited-series-1236530158\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1236530158\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">win eight Emmys <\/a>and made its way into political conversation in the UK, where Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced a deal with Netflix to stream the series for free in secondary schools. It also marked a peculiar bit of dissonance: while Adolescence was conquering Netflix, British drama producers were <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/02\/british-tv-dramatists-lament-austerity-era-1236284139\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wringing their hands<\/a> about a funding crisis on home soil. Two years after The Sunday Times published allegations that <strong>Russell Brand<\/strong> sexually assaulted four women at the height of his fame, the Forgetting Sarah Marshall star was <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/04\/russell-brand-charged-rape-sexual-assault-1236359373\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">charged with rape<\/a>, indecent assault, and sexual assault by London\u2019s Metropolitan Police.\u00a0In December, the Met brought <a data-id=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/12\/russell-brand-charged-two-more-rape-sexual-assault-1236655804\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/12\/russell-brand-charged-two-more-rape-sexual-assault-1236655804\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">two fresh charges<\/a> of rape and sexual assault against him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tBrand has reinvented himself as a Christian convert who evangelizes about free speech and free thinking in MAGA America, but he saved UK authorities a potential extradition headache by appearing in court in May. Brand pleaded not guilty and will face trial in June 2026. \u201cI\u2019m now gonna have the opportunity to defend these charges in court, and I\u2019m incredibly grateful for that,\u201d he told his followers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tBrand was not the only British actor to be charged with rape in 2025: <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/07\/micheal-ward-top-boy-charged-rape-1236468734\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1236468734\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Micheal Ward<\/strong> appeared in court<\/a> over similar allegations. Although the tariffs are yet to materialize, Trump has continued to chunter about the film biz in recent months, and history tells us he\u2019s prepared to follow through with threats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tMay was also the month when the new <strong>Harry Potter<\/strong> was introduced to the world. Step forward young Scottish actor <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/05\/hbos-harry-potter-series-cast-harry-ron-hermione-1236411573\/#:~:text=Watch%20on%20Deadline,are%20all%20relative%20TV%20newcomers.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dominic McLaughlin<\/a>, who will star as the titular wizard in HBO\u2019s hugely anticipated TV adaptation of J.K. Rowling\u2019s behemoth. He will be joined by Alastair Stout and Arabella Stanton, who will play Potter\u2019s trusty sidekicks Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, respectively.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tHarry Potter casting has been one of the themes of 2025, with others attached including Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore and Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall. The distribution pact was the equivalent of NBC, or another major American commercial network, handing over its output to Netflix.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tAt the time, Deadline noted that the deal was probably \u201cthe start of something bigger.\u201d We were right. Just a month later, <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/07\/disney-itv-landmark-deal-love-island-the-bear-the-kardashians-1236453780\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Disney inked a content-swap agreement with UK network ITV<\/a>, under which shows like I\u2019m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here! stream on Disney+ and ITV gained access to Star Wars titles like Andor. Disney has since struck similar deals with ZDF and Atresmedia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tElsewhere in June, punk rap band Bob Vylan became a household name in the UK after their performance at Glastonbury Festival. Frontman <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/06\/glastonbury-bbc-kneecap-bob-vylan-live-free-palestine-chant-1236445211\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bobby Vylan screamed \u201cDeath, death to the IDF\u201d<\/a> on stage, and his words were streamed live by the BBC, causing an almighty stink. One story from production that raised eyebrows, however, was the <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/07\/christopher-nolan-criticized-the-odyssey-western-sahara-1236472951\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">backlash against <\/a>Nolan\u2019s decision to briefly film in Morocco-occupied Western Sahara.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tMorocco\u2019s authority over Western Sahara, which is roughly the size of New Zealand, is not recognized by the international community. Nolan\u2019s entry into this sensitive political arena was painful for indigenous Sahrawi people and their supporters. The Western Sahara International Film Festival (FiSahara), which takes place in the Sahrawi refugee camps in Algeria, issued a <a data-id=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/07\/christopher-nolan-criticized-the-odyssey-western-sahara-1236472951\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/07\/christopher-nolan-criticized-the-odyssey-western-sahara-1236472951\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">provocative statement<\/a> saying that the celebrated British director was fueling \u201cbrutal repression.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tJuly also gave us a literary scandal that had ramifications in the film world, when The Observer newspaper alleged that author <strong>Raynor Winn<\/strong> gave misleading information about her life story in her beloved book The Salt Path. The milestone was announced after a sing-along version of the film hit big screens in the U.S., finishing No. 1 at the box office with an estimated $19.2 million.
