Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu signed a joint declaration<\/a> with Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullah \u201cin the spirit of the Abraham Accords,\u201d a series of agreements to create commercial and diplomatic ties between Israel and Arab countries, AP reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Netanyahu is expected to meet U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday in Florida. On Friday the New York Post reported<\/a> that Trump said he would not follow Israel\u2019s lead in recognizing Somaliland\u2019s independence. <\/p>\n

The U.S. State Department on Saturday said it continued to recognize the territorial integrity of Somalia, \u201cwhich includes the territory of Somaliland.\u201d<\/p>\n

Qatar called<\/a> the declaration \u201ca dangerous precedent and a unilateral action that contravenes the principles of international law.\u201d<\/p>\n

The African Union said<\/a> it \u201cfirmly rejects any initiative or action aimed at recognizing Somaliland as an independent entity\u201d without mentioning Israel. <\/p>\n

The European External Action Service<\/a>, the EU\u2019s diplomatic arm, also reacted to the news, saying<\/a> in a statement Saturday that it \u201creaffirms the importance of respecting the unity, the sovereignty and the territorial integrity\u201d of Somalia.
