Thousands of pounds have been raised to support a young paramedic diagnosed with incurable breast cancer. Abbie Tutchings was undergoing a breast reconstruction when medics realised her cancer had spread.<\/p>\n

The 31-year-old had undergone a mastectomy and everyone thought the disease had gone, with yearly mammograms showing no evidence of recurrence. However, during the reconstruction surgery, in November this year, surgeons uncovered what they thought could be more cancer.<\/p>\n

Follow up up tests revealed the cancer had spread to her lung and ribs. Abbie, who worked for the North East Ambulance Service<\/a>, was given the devastating news it was stage four and incurable.<\/p>\n

Teesside Live reports<\/a> how Abbie had dreamed of being a paramedic from the age of seven and at 20 moved from her home town in The Wirral to study at Teesside University in Middlesbrough. She made Teesside her home and gained a job as a front line paramedic with the North East Ambulance Service.<\/p>\n

Her friend and fellow paramedic, Lois Armes, said the news has come as a shocking and heartbreaking blow for Abbie and her family and friends after they thought she had beaten the cancer.<\/p>\n

Lois, 35, said: “None of us were expecting this. For the past three years everything has been so positive. Abbie has been through a cruel and unfair journey, being diagnosed with breast cancer in her late 20s to now the devastating news of secondary cancer. But her strength and resilience is second to none.”<\/p>\n

Abbie, who lived in Normanby, was diagnosed with cancer in August 2021 after finding a large lump in her right breast. She underwent a mastectomy two months later, followed by six rounds of chemotherapy and five rounds of radiotherapy and returned to work July 2022.<\/p>\n

Lois has set up a funding page<\/a>, which has already raised more than \u00a312,000, to help Abbie live life to the fullest and tick things off her bucket list, which includes travel. Money will also be used to pay for treatments which will hopefully give Abbie as much time as possible.<\/p>\n

She said: “Not only is Abbie one of the most amazing, strongest, kind and generous people to walk this planet, she has helped care for people in her job as a front-line paramedic and it\u2019s only right we give something back. I’m hoping we can all spare some cash to ensure Abbie can live life to the fullest and have some amazing experiences ticking things off her bucket list and make the most amazing memories.”<\/p>\n

Abbie said: “Honestly I am blown away by the donations and it’s more than I ever could’ve imagined, it’s shown and reminded me how loved I really am and can use it to make some wonderful memories, a booster that I never imagined I’d have.”<\/p>\n

Abbie’s mum Lynne added: “Your generosity and compassion during this incredibly difficult time mean more than I can express. Since Abbie\u2019s recent diagnosis of stage four metastatic cancer, our world has changed forever \u2014 but your messages, kindness, and support have reminded us that we are not facing this alone.<\/p>\n

“Your donations and the love behind them have lifted us up as we struggle to face the reality of what the future holds. We are so deeply grateful for the care and kindness you’ve shown to Abbie.<\/p>\n

“We hope to get Abbie onto treatment in the near future in an effort to slow the spread of her cancer, giving her more time to make memories and to see some of her dreams come true \u2014 and your generosity will, without doubt, play an important part in making this possible. Thank you for walking beside us and for reminding us that, even in the hardest moments, there is still so much goodness in this world.”<\/p>\n
