\u201cUnbelievably, drink\/drug driving continued to be an issue in our District over Christmas. The level off intoxication in a number of recent detections have truly beggared belief.<\/p>\n
“A man in Fintona, who was reported to police by a concerned member of the public, provided a preliminary breath sample of a frankly staggering 146 \u2013 more than FOUR times the legal limit.<\/p>\n
“Similarly, a roadside test carried out on a woman in Enniskillen, again reported by worried members of the public, returned a reading of 145 at around 3pm in the afternoon.<\/p>\n
“Both were arrested at the respective scenes and will now face the consequences of deciding to drive drunk.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn Omagh, another possible drink driver was reported as being \u2018all over the road\u2019 and when located, we established that the car involved was stolen.<\/p>\n
“The driver made off at speed in the vehicle and, following a brief pursuit, the driver and a number of his passengers were arrested.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is just no excuse for driving under the influence of drink or drugs. Any amount of alcohol impairs reaction time and coordination making you more prone to accidents, and drugs likewise.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, the PSNI launched their annual anti-drink and drug-driving operation.<\/p>\n
Some 6,265 preliminary breath tests were conducted during the previous year\u2019s campaign, with 298 arrested on suspicion of drink or drug driving during the same period.<\/p>\n
Chief Superintendent Sam Donaldson said: \u201cThere is no excuse for driving with drink or drugs.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you get behind the wheel of a vehicle after having a drink, or taken drugs, you are putting yourself and everyone else at risk.\u201d<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, police in the Republic said a motorist had been caught driving at more than 200km per hour.<\/p>\n
The detection of a vehicle driving at 207km\/hr (128mph) came on the N18 in Ballinacurra, Co Limerick, on the fourth week of gardai’s traffic enforcement operation across the Christmas period.<\/p>\n
During that week, from Monday December 22 to Sunday December 28, there were three fatalities on Ireland’s roads and eight serious collisions that resulted in a number of people being seriously injured.<\/p>\n
Across the week, gardai carried out almost 2,100 checkpoints.
