A bakery worker jumped onto a table in Wetherspoons and threw a glass and chairs after having “far too much to drink”. Daniel Pettifer was said to have turned violent after other customers took exception with his drunken antics inside the pub.<\/p>\n

Liverpool Crown Court<\/a> heard the 35-year-old attended the Premier, a branch of JD Wetherspoon in Widnes<\/a>, on the evening of February 28 this year. But others inside the premises were said to have “taken exception” with his drunken behaviour, resulting in a violent confrontation.<\/p>\n

Derek Jones, prosecuting, described how this resulted in Pettifer, of Croyde Road in Speke<\/a>, jumping onto a table and throwing a glass and chairs. Having ultimately been released on bail following his subsequent arrest, he went on to punch the wall at the home of a woman he was spending the evening with during a further incident.<\/p>\n

Pettifer was previously handed a 12-month imprisonment suspended for two years for matters of battery, theft and criminal damage in February 2024. He then twice breached a restraining order imposed upon him in June 2024 and August 2025, resulting in sentences of two months behind bars and a community order.<\/p>\n

Gerald Baxter, defending, told the court his client had suffered the “loss of twins being carried by his ex-partner” as well as the death of his grandad in July of this year, adding: “Those have preyed on his mind.<\/p>\n

“He has explained to me a history of mental health problems, including what he describes as severe self harming and, on one occasion not long ago, three weeks ago, he tried to kill himself.<\/p>\n

“On the positive side, he has had some employment, since July, working for Warburtons bakery in Widnes. He says, at the moment, his employment has been put on hold.<\/p>\n

“He was held in quite high esteem at the bakery, with the possibility of a promotion to a position of foreman.<\/p>\n

“He also had a settled address. He says he had been homeless earlier in the year. Having that settled address is important to him. He was sharing it with a friend. That address, he says, is open to him.<\/p>\n

“Both the job and address are in jeopardy, dependant on the outcome of today’s hearing.<\/p>\n

“He has asked me to say that he is very sorry for the way he behaved.”<\/p>\n

Pettifer admitted using threatening behaviour, assault, criminal damage and breaching a suspended sentence order Appearing via video link to HMP Liverpool, he was jailed for a year.<\/p>\n

Sentencing, Judge Dennis Watson KC said: “You had far too much to drink. Others took exception to the way you had been behaving, which resulted in a melee.<\/p>\n

“I accept that there was violence used against you, but it was your conduct that brought that on you.<\/p>\n

“I do not condone what happened to you at all, but neither should you have been threatening and jumping on a table and throwing a glass. Chairs were thrown as well.
