{"id":663788,"date":"2025-12-31T02:45:27","date_gmt":"2025-12-31T02:45:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/663788\/"},"modified":"2025-12-31T02:45:27","modified_gmt":"2025-12-31T02:45:27","slug":"a-rare-cancer-fighting-plant-compound-has-finally-been-decoded","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/663788\/","title":{"rendered":"A Rare Cancer-Fighting Plant Compound has Finally Been Decoded"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>        <img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-227411\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Anti-cancer-plant-enzyme-uncovered\u2013UBC-Okanagan-Tuan-Anh-Nguyen-and-Dr-Thu-Thuy-Dang-in-their-lab.jp.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1400\" height=\"750\"\/>Anti-cancer plant enzyme uncovered by Tuan-Anh Nguyen and Dr Thu-Thuy Dang \u2013 UBC Okanagan<\/p>\n<p>Canadian researchers have figured out how plants make a rare natural substance\u2014mitraphylline\u2014with its potential for fighting cancer and becoming a sustainable new medicine.<\/p>\n<p>Mitraphylline is part of a small and unusual family of plant alkaloids, molecules that are defined by their distinctive twisted ring shapes, which help give them powerful anti-tumor and anti-inflammatory effects.<\/p>\n<p>For years, scientists knew these compounds were valuable but had little understanding of how plants actually assembled them at the molecular level.<\/p>\n<p>In solving a long standing biological mystery, progress came in 2023, when a research team led by Dr. Thu-Thuy Dang at the University of British Columbia-Okanagan identified the first known plant enzyme capable of creating the signature \u2018spiro\u2019 shape found in these molecules.<\/p>\n<p>Building on that discovery, doctoral student Tuan-Anh Nguyen led new work to pinpoint two key enzymes involved in making mitraphylline\u2014one enzyme that arranges the molecule into the correct three dimensional structure, and another that twists it into its final form.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is similar to finding the missing links in an assembly line,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/news.ok.ubc.ca\/2025\/10\/14\/researchers-reveal-how-plants-make-anti-tumour-drugs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">says Dr. Dang<\/a>, the university\u2019s Research Chair in Natural Products Biotechnology. \u201cIt answers a long-standing question about how nature builds these complex molecules and gives us a new way to replicate that process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-227414\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Kratom-tree-leaves-by-Jade-at-Thehealingeast-CC-BY-SA-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1400\" height=\"750\"  \/>Red vein kratom leaves by Jade at Thehealingeast \u2013 CC BY-SA 4.0<\/p>\n<p>Many promising natural compounds exist only in extremely small quantities within plants, making them expensive or impractical to produce using traditional laboratory methods. Mitraphylline is a prime example.
