{"id":663848,"date":"2025-12-31T03:30:16","date_gmt":"2025-12-31T03:30:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/663848\/"},"modified":"2025-12-31T03:30:16","modified_gmt":"2025-12-31T03:30:16","slug":"international-energy-leader-honoured-with-obe-the-nen-north-edinburgh-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/663848\/","title":{"rendered":"International energy leader honoured with OBE \u2013 The NEN \u2013 North Edinburgh News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/nen.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/MMV2.jpg.jpeg?ssl=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1499\" height=\"1731\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/MMV2.jpg.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-220414\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Professor Mercedes Maroto-Valer, Heriot-Watt University\u2019s Deputy Principal for Global Sustainability, has been awarded an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to Low Energy Technologies.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The honour was announced today (Dec 30) with the publication of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegazette.co.uk\/London\/issue\/64940\/data.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">King\u2019s New Year Honours List 2026<\/a>, which recognises exceptional contributions made by individuals across the 15 Commonwealth realms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">An internationally recognised leader in energy innovation, Professor Maroto-Valer is Director of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/idric.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UK Industrial Decarbonisation Research and Innovation Centre<\/a>\u00a0(IDRIC), based at Heriot-Watt University\u2019s Edinburgh campus. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">IDRIC plays a central role in supporting the green transformation of the UK\u2019s industrial heartlands. Funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), the national funding body for science and research, the centre brings together academia, industry and government to deliver practical solutions for economic growth to the country\u2019s decarbonisation challenges at a scale that matters. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">She also leads Heriot-Watt\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/rccs.hw.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Research Centre for Carbon Solutions<\/a>\u00a0(RCCS ), a world-leading engineering centre, inspiring and delivering innovation for the wider deployment of technologies needed to meet carbon targets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Professor Maroto-Valer was selected for the honour by King Charles III in recognition of her internationally respected leadership in energy and her remarkable contributions in low-energy technologies that reduce emissions while supporting long-term economic growth.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/nen.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/MMV1-1.jpg-1.jpg?ssl=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1241\" height=\"2180\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/MMV1-1.jpg-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-220416\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><strong>She said: \u201cI am deeply humbled to receive this Honour. Addressing climate change is one of the defining challenges of our time, with low energy technologies representing not just an environmental necessity, but also an economic opportunity. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThis recognition reflects the collective efforts of the outstanding colleagues, partners and students I have had the privilege to work with in driving innovation, improving competitiveness, and ensuring a prosperous and sustainable transition to net zero.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Professor Maroto-Valer is a globally recognised engineer whose work has helped shape the international response to climate change and supporting growth in a low-carbon global economy. Since 2022, she has led Heriot-Watt University\u2019s sustainability strategy and goals, working closely with students, staff and alumni to embed sustainability across teaching, research and operations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">She also holds leading positions in a number of professional societies and editorial boards. These include her role on the UN Council of Engineers for the Energy Transition (CEET), a high-level, independent advisory council supporting the UN Secretary-General\u2019s ambition to identify practical engineering pathways to net zero through expert scientific analysis and guidance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Congratulating Professor Maroto-Valer, Heriot-Watt\u2019s Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Richard A.
