{"id":664154,"date":"2025-12-31T06:51:17","date_gmt":"2025-12-31T06:51:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/664154\/"},"modified":"2025-12-31T06:51:17","modified_gmt":"2025-12-31T06:51:17","slug":"russia-ukraine-as-russia-approaches-a-grim-milestone-putin-projects-confidence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/664154\/","title":{"rendered":"Russia-Ukraine: As Russia approaches a grim milestone, Putin projects confidence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjr1gopa00lv26qecwp14pzc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Russia is approaching a grim milestone: by mid-January, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/12\/29\/world\/trump-meeting-zelensky-ukraine-terrific-putin-intl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">President Vladimir Putin<\/a>\u2019s \u201cspecial military operation\u201d in Ukraine will have dragged on longer than the war on the Eastern Front that began with the German invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941 and ended with the fall of Berlin in May 1945.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjr1j28h0005356p27edoxix@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Putin is famously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/05\/08\/europe\/victory-day-russia-ukraine-war-analysis-cmd-intl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">obsessed with World War II<\/a> and official veneration of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany is part of the ideological glue that holds together the Russian state. Putin\u2019s Russia has even seen the rehabilitation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/01\/20\/opinions\/new-stalin-centers-russia-putin-mcglynn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Josef Stalin<\/a>, the Communist dictator who presided over a ruthless purge in the 1930s before leading his country in what is known in Russia as the Great Patriotic War.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjr1gsd50000356pvk2trb1z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But nearly four years after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, a decisive victory over Kyiv eludes the Kremlin leader: Russia controls about 20% of Ukrainian territory, the war <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/06\/04\/europe\/russia-war-casualties-1-million-ukraine-intl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">is estimated to have cost<\/a> Moscow more than a million casualties, and in perhaps the biggest affront to Putin\u2019s war aims, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/11\/16\/world\/pokrovsk-russia-ukraine-tactics-intl#:~:text=The%20UK&#039;s%20Ministry%20of%20Defence,killed%20or%20wounded%20this%20year\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">remains in power.<\/a>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjr1m9a60009356pdrry801l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But as the year comes to an end, Putin is projecting confidence that time is on his side and that winning is inevitable. Ahead of a summit with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in December, Putin gave an interview with India Today where he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/12\/04\/europe\/ukraine-donbas-putin-india-intl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> Russia would \u201cliberate Donbas and Novorossiya in any case \u2013 by military or other means,\u201d doubling down on his demand to acquire all the regions of Ukraine that Russia claims, including those that his troops have not managed to take by force.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjr1paqz000c356p7mcmh2op@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And that bloody-mindedness seems to be a bargaining strategy. Putin is surely aware that US President Donald Trump is determined to reach a deal on Ukraine and the Russian leader has done everything in his power to extract the maximum gain from Washington\u2019s eagerness to end the conflict.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/2025-12-19t102616z-531237858-rc2mjia1hdky-rtrmadp-3-russia-putin.JPG\" alt=\"Putin recently claimed to be ready to \" finish=\"\" the=\"\" conflict=\"\" by=\"\" peaceful=\"\" means=\"\" but=\"\" his=\"\" forces=\"\" continue=\"\" to=\"\" advance=\"\" across=\"\" front=\"\" line.=\"\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjr1qhek000h356pjkn1kxs9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In his year-end press conference, the Russian president said his country was ready and willing \u201cto finish the conflict by peaceful means\u201d \u2014 but not without boasting that his forces were \u201cadvancing across the whole of the front line.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjr1qhek000i356pi9drp1wb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Putin\u2019s reasons for projecting swagger are clear. For starters, the Kremlin leader has been able to watch as a once-unified Western front supporting Kyiv showed serious fractures after Trump took office in January.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjr1qhek000j356p8k2zlw7w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In February, US Vice President JD Vance stunned European leaders at the Munich Security Conference with a speech excoriating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/02\/14\/europe\/jd-vance-munich-speech-europe-voters-intl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Washington\u2019s transatlantic allies.<\/a> That spectacle was followed by a very public dressing-down of Zelensky by Trump and Vance in the Oval Office.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/gettyimages-2201826980-20250304165839370.jpg\" alt=\"The relationship between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Donald Trump was turbulent in early 2025, but appeared to heal as the year progressed.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2668\" width=\"4000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjr1tvpr000l356p08d4bap6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A few months later, another public-relations coup for the Kremlin followed with the summit meeting in Anchorage, Alaska, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/08\/15\/politics\/takeaways-trump-putin-summit-alaska\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">between Putin and Trump.<\/a> While the summit fell short of yielding a thaw in US-Russian relations, it was more than a photo opportunity for Putin: The Russian president was able to play for more time in his relentless war of attrition against Ukraine.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjr1v66n000n356pijiqkdyn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But Putin\u2019s apparent reluctance to engage more seriously in peace efforts after Anchorage did eventually test Trump\u2019s patience. An invitation to a second US-Russian bilateral summit in Budapest fell through and the Trump administration slapped sanctions on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/10\/22\/politics\/bessent-sanctions-russia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Russia\u2019s two largest oil companies.<\/a> The US president, who often has words of praise for Putin, expressed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/25\/world\/video\/trump-erdogan-meeting-putin-vrtc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">frustration with his Russian counterpart.<\/a>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjr1qdiv000f356p9l7i5twv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Still, enough ice appears to have been broken between Washington and Moscow to allow an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/12\/01\/politics\/kushner-witkoff-moscow-putin-ukraine-russia-peace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unconventional US diplomatic effort<\/a> led by Trump\u2019s former business associate Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law Jared Kushner to advance.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjr1xw08000q356pin88rlvk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Following Witkoff and Kushner\u2019s visit to the Kremlin in early December, a flurry of high-level diplomacy involving Zelensky and European leaders ensued, with much talk about hammering out the finer points of a potential agreement.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/gettyimages-2250083036.jpg\" alt=\"Zelensky, second from right, joined British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz for talks in London in early December.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjr1yz8a000v356plnlbfda2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            By mid-December, Trump\u2019s prognosis was optimistic, with the US president telling reporters that \u201cwe\u2019re closer now than we have been, ever\u201d to a peace deal.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjsdwmdf000a3b6n4dkzq55k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But at year\u2019s end, Putin still appears to occupy the role of potential dealbreaker: While Zelensky gained an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/12\/28\/politics\/trump-zelensky-florida-meeting-takeaways\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">audience with Trump<\/a> at Mar-a-Lago last weekend to talk through a revised peace deal, the Kremlin leader bookended that meeting with his own phone calls to the American president.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjsduf3z00053b6nnwqa6iew@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And the Russian position on peace talks now appears to be hardening. In his conversation with Trump on Monday, Putin informed his American counterpart about an alleged Ukrainian drone attack on his Valdai residence in Novgorod region, according to a readout given to Russian state radio by Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjsdw9rs00073b6n7g5l938q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also telegraphed outrage over the claimed attack \u2013 which Zelensky dismissed as \u201ca complete fabrication\u201d\u202f\u2013 by saying that \u201cRussia\u2019s negotiating position will be revised\u201d amid the ongoing peace process.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjr1yz8a000w356pfdmlsm9y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Some Kremlin-watchers are skeptical about Putin accepting a deal that would cross any of his red lines. The contours of such a deal are still emerging, but the Russian side has long been clear about the main sticking points.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjse1d1r000e3b6nnlz1hivf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Most recently, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Sergey Ryabkov reiterated them in an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/International\/russia-ukraine-verge-deal-end-war-deputy-foreign\/story?id=128390935\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ABC News:<\/a> No surrender of any Ukrainian territory that Moscow lays claim to, and no NATO boots on the ground in Ukraine after the war ends.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/2025-12-02t184918z-437991045-rc2i8ia13j2l-rtrmadp-3-ukraine-crisis-putin-witkoff.JPG\" alt=\"Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner visited the Kremlin in December for a meeting with Putin, his envoy Kirill Dmitriev and foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1302\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjr1ywhz000t356p8qu28xyy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cLavrov, Ushakov, (Kremlin spokesman Dmitry) Peskov, and Putin himself (who has visibly ramped up engagements with the military while doubling down on \u2018we will achieve our goals\u2019) have made it clear that the revised plan is entirely unacceptable. Yet Washington continues engaging Kyiv, touting \u2018progress\u2019 that Moscow views as illusory,\u201d Russian political observer Tatiana Stanovaya <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/stanovaya\/status\/2005947027440406925?s=48\" target=\"_blank\">wrote<\/a> on X after the latest talks in Mar-a-Lago.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjsj1q0k000g3b6nwgdh0f2d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis is precisely what the Russian story about a drone attack on Putin\u2019s residence is about: a forceful \u2018pound on the table\u2019 to make the West finally hear that the current peace negotiations are heading in a completely unacceptable direction for Moscow and to derail the emerging US-Ukrainian framework,\u201d she said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjsj1q0k000h3b6na7md61md@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Putin has Trump\u2019s ear but he has not succeeded yet in drowning out those competing voices. How much of the Kremlin\u2019s confidence is smoke and mirrors is the big question.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjsj4jtt000q3b6n2ickev6u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In November, Putin donned camouflage to pay a visit to a military command post in an undisclosed location, where the commander-in-chief of Russia\u2019s military, Gen. Valery Gerasimov, claimed Russian troops were in control of the eastern town of Kupiansk.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjr22lho0016356p98qf69d7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Just a few weeks later, Putin was upstaged by Zelensky, who posted a video of a visit to Kupiansk, wearing body armor and standing in front of a pockmarked \u2013 and very geolocatable \u2013 sign. Asked later about the video during his year-end press conference, Putin was dismissive, mocking the Ukrainian president as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/world\/live-news\/russia-ukraine-war-putin-news-conference-12-19-25-intl#cmjco81xa000b3b6p3jpn9n80\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201ca talented artist\u201d<\/a> engaged in theatrics.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjr22jut0014356pes2j9wtb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The mood in Russia is hard to gauge \u2013 criticizing the military can land a person in jail \u2013 and the economy keeps lumbering along, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imf.org\/external\/datamapper\/profile\/RUS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">despite slowing growth<\/a> and a Ukrainian campaign of strikes on Russian energy infrastructure, the cornerstone of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/12\/20\/business\/russia-economy-struggling-ukraine-war-intl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Moscow\u2019s economic power.<\/a>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjr25d2j0019356pqcrwqexg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Yet Putin\u2019s unchallenged grip on power gives him leverage in any peace process.
