Network Rail is planning to update the \u201cdilapidated and inefficient\u201d welfare facilities at one of its depots near Sheffield city centre.<\/p>\n
The rail organisation has applied to Sheffield City Council for planning permission to demolish cabins on its site at Blast Lane, next to Victoria Quays. <\/p>\n
The cabins will be replaced by a two-storey welfare building which will include office space and meeting rooms. Parking bays will also be reconfigured. <\/p>\n
A supporting document states: \u201cThe proposal seeks to consolidate life-expired, temporary structures into a sustainable and efficient facility that meets operational and staff welfare needs. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe existing welfare and office accommodation at the Blast Lane Depot consists of modular units and shipping containers, which are now at the end of their lifespan and appear dilapidated and inefficient. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe corrosion of external steel staircases raises both aesthetic concerns and potential safety risks, while the poor spatial configuration of these temporary structures results in high operational costs and an unsustainable carbon footprint for Network Rail. <\/p>\n
\u201cReplacement is required for the site to maintain operational safety and efficiency.\u201d <\/p>\n
The new plans will include a landscaped outdoor seating area for staff and secure cycle storage. <\/p>\n
The site is next to two railway lines and the Sheffield Tinsley Canal runs nearby from Sheffield Canal Basin. <\/p>\n
The application is set to be determined by February 9, 2026.<\/p>\n
