{"id":664888,"date":"2025-12-31T14:53:13","date_gmt":"2025-12-31T14:53:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/664888\/"},"modified":"2025-12-31T14:53:13","modified_gmt":"2025-12-31T14:53:13","slug":"felix-auger-aliassime-hopes-for-deep-australian-open-run-after-career-best-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/664888\/","title":{"rendered":"Felix Auger-Aliassime hopes for deep Australian Open run after career-best year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In-form Felix Auger-Aliassime believes he can challenge at the Australian Open after his best year on tour, with the Canadian gun closing the gap on leading duo Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The 25-year-old will headline Canada&#8217;s push at the United Cup, with teenage champion Victoria Mboko making her debut when the tournament gets underway in Sydney and Perth this week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Auger-Aliassime made the quarterfinals at Melbourne Park in 2022 which was his best-ever result, but was a surprise elimination in the second round in 2025 after winning the Adelaide International.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It kicked off a lean run at the majors, also falling in the first round of the French Open and round two at Wimbledon with his ranking just inside world number 30.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But Auger-Aliassime&#8217;s year turned around after he steered Canada to the Hopman Cup title in July, and from there he won 24 of 31 matches, including a semifinal appearance at the US Open.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Felix Auger-Aliassime shakes hands with Carlos Alcaraz\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/99463bfcea64182ebbe05170e1fe2ce9.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Felix Auger-Aliassime says he knows he needs to improve to genuinely challenge Carlos Alcaraz.\u00a0 (Getty Images: NurPhoto\/Miguel Reis)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It was his second start in the final four of a major, also making the semis at Flushing Meadows in 2021.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It was great \u2014 I&#8217;ve had good results in other tournaments but maybe not as much in big events such as the grand slam so it was good to be back in the US Open semifinals,&#8221; he told reporters in Sydney.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I have great memories playing in Australia in the past and remember a couple of years ago making a quarterfinal run here and feeling like I was close to my best level.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;So hopefully I can go even further this year.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Of the seven matches Auger-Aliassime lost in that stretch, five came against Alcaraz and two-time Australian Open winner Sinner, who he pushed to four sets at the US Open.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The newly-wed said his recent run of results had boosted his confidence.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/radio\/programs\/abc-sport-daily\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ABC Sport Daily podcast<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">ABC Sport Daily is your daily sports conversation.
