{"id":665932,"date":"2026-01-01T02:35:16","date_gmt":"2026-01-01T02:35:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/665932\/"},"modified":"2026-01-01T02:35:16","modified_gmt":"2026-01-01T02:35:16","slug":"kemi-badenoch-accuses-labour-of-reopening-old-brexit-wounds-to-shore-up-its-core-vote-after-senior-ministers-urge-closer-relationship-with-europe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/665932\/","title":{"rendered":"Kemi Badenoch accuses Labour of reopening old Brexit wounds to shore up its core vote after senior ministers urge closer relationship with Europe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"author-section byline-plain\">By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/profile-848\/martin-beckford.html\" class=\"author\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MARTIN BECKFORD, POLICY EDITOR<\/a> <\/p>\n<p class=\"byline-section\"> Published:  19:01 EST, 31 December 2025   |  Updated:  19:01 EST, 31 December 2025   <\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\"><a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/kemi-badenoch\/index.html\" id=\"mol-f452bf20-e66e-11f0-ba26-b31676ee89dd\" rel=\"noopener\">Kemi Badenoch<\/a> has accused Labour of reopening old <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/brexit\/index.html\" id=\"mol-f4751430-e66e-11f0-ba26-b31676ee89dd\" rel=\"noopener\">Brexit<\/a> wounds in a desperate ploy to shore up its core vote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/conservatives\/index.html\" id=\"mol-f47b7cd0-e66e-11f0-ba26-b31676ee89dd\" rel=\"noopener\">Tory<\/a> leader said growing calls by some ministers for the UK to rejoin the European customs union showed the Government has no plan or new ideas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">And she warned that the move would mean Britain giving up the trade deals it has struck since leaving the EU, including with the US and <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/india\/index.html\" id=\"mol-f47d9fb0-e66e-11f0-ba26-b31676ee89dd\" rel=\"noopener\">India<\/a>, while opening the door to even more demands for concessions from Brussels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Her comments come after Health Secretary <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/wes-streeting\/index.html\" id=\"mol-f472ca40-e66e-11f0-ba26-b31676ee89dd\" rel=\"noopener\">Wes Streeting<\/a> claimed the best way to improve the economy would be a \u2018deeper trading relationship with the EU\u2019 while Deputy Prime Minister <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/david-lammy\/index.html\" id=\"mol-f43b8da0-e66e-11f0-ba26-b31676ee89dd\" rel=\"noopener\">David Lammy<\/a> repeatedly refused to rule out reversing Brexit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Britain\u2019s most senior trade union boss, TUC General Secretary Paul Nowak, has also urged Sir <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/keir-starmer\/index.html\" id=\"mol-f451fbd0-e66e-11f0-ba26-b31676ee89dd\" rel=\"noopener\">Keir Starmer<\/a> not to rule out a customs union even though it is one of the Prime Minister\u2019s \u2018red lines\u2019 on improving relations with the EU.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Writing in the Daily Mail, former Trade Secretary Mrs Badenoch said: \u2018The fact is that the only people advocating for such a policy &#8211; and here I include the trade union bosses who have also proposed it &#8211; do not understand what a customs union actually is.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">She accused Labour of failing to understand that \u2018trade policy is power\u2019 and that a country that loses control of it is no longer able to govern itself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018This is why the renewed chatter about dragging Britain back into the EU\u2019s customs union should worry us all. It is not a sign of pragmatism &#8211; it is a symptom of Labour\u2019s weakness.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>   <img decoding=\"async\" id=\"i-5f8243dbe22dff5e\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/105139151-15425385-image-a-1_1767202296076.jpg\" height=\"429\" width=\"634\" alt=\"Conservative party leader Kemi Badenoch on a visit to a drone firm in Hampshire last month\" class=\"blkBorder img-share\" style=\"max-width:100%\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>   <\/p>\n<p class=\"imageCaption\">Conservative party leader Kemi Badenoch on a visit to a drone firm in Hampshire last month<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Listing the Government\u2019s U-turns on everything from restricting Winter Fuel Payments to imposing Inheritance Tax on family farms, the Conservative leader said: \u2018Now that the government is weak and has no plan or new ideas, it has re-opened old Brexit wounds in the vain hope that doing so will make it more popular.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018It won\u2019t.
