Many Xbox fans have been questioning why it’s taken so long to add more Activision (and Blizzard) games to Xbox Game Pass<\/a> since acquiring the company a couple of years ago, as we’ve only seen a certain number since then.<\/p>\n

For example, all the classic Call of Duty games seem to be primed for Xbox Game Pass<\/a> at some point, but they’ve yet to arrive on the service. There’s also Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2<\/a>, the older Diablo<\/a> games and plenty of others yet to join.<\/p>\n

Speaking on the Xbox Two podcast<\/a> a few days ago, The Verge’s Tom Warren chimed in with his thoughts on the situation, suggesting that complications around things like licenses might be restricting what can be added right now:<\/p>\n

I think a lot of it is just because it’s so complicated to look at those older games and get them into Game Pass. Some of them are not even modernised – so it’s like, getting them on the cloud save platform and all that sort of stuff. There’s real dev work to do there.<\/p>\n

Then there’s licensing. They might have to even go to old voice actors for royalties contracts and stuff – it depends how these contracts were written back then. So there’s definitely licensing issues there I think as well.<\/p>\n

I think it’s a mixture of those that’s holding some of this stuff back. They’ve done some, and I think they’ll just roll as and when they’re ready. I don’t know if there’s going to be a big drop.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

All of this makes sense, and Phil Spencer did allude to work that needed to be done with Activision Blizzard titles<\/a> in 2023 ahead of bringing them to Game Pass, but the frustration around a lack of messaging is also understandable.<\/p>\n

When Bethesda was acquired by Xbox, we did get a big batch of games suddenly arriving in Xbox Game Pass, so it’s natural that fans hoped for something similar once again. That obviously didn’t end up being the case, but we don’t have any official timelines to prepare for – and that’s ultimately why this topic continues to be discussed in the community.<\/p>\n

The good news is that Xbox hasn’t stopped bringing these titles to Game Pass – apparently Crash Bandicoot 4<\/a> and Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 (2009)<\/a> are on the way, and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4<\/a> is launching day one on Xbox Game Pass this July. Just last week, we were also treated to the Blizzard Arcade Collection<\/a>! Here’s hoping that by the time this year is done, we’ll have many more Activision Blizzard titles on there…<\/p>\n
