{"id":669536,"date":"2026-01-02T18:47:15","date_gmt":"2026-01-02T18:47:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/669536\/"},"modified":"2026-01-02T18:47:15","modified_gmt":"2026-01-02T18:47:15","slug":"bristol-rovers-plans-to-redevelop-memorial-stadium-stall-as-move-explored","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/669536\/","title":{"rendered":"Bristol Rovers: Plans to redevelop Memorial Stadium stall as move &#8216;explored&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Rovers&#8217; various stadium plans over the years have come to no fruition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The club were involved in a High Court battle <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-bristol-33503419\" class=\"ssrcss-k8mrr8-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">over a deal with Sainsbury&#8217;s<\/a> to buy the Mem in 2011, while plans to build a 21,000-seater stadium at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-bristol-40811022\" class=\"ssrcss-k8mrr8-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of West of England were abandoned<\/a> six years later.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A proposed move to a new ground at Bristol&#8217;s Fruit Market site close to the city centre was then mentioned as a possible new home for some time and AlSaeed previously told the BBC it was &#8220;on the table&#8221; when he took over.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">However, that move was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/football\/67250384\" class=\"ssrcss-k8mrr8-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ruled out in October 2023<\/a>, the aim reverting to improving their current home with AlSaeed saying in February 2025 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/football\/articles\/cwyez0pv7e0o\" class=\"ssrcss-k8mrr8-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he was &#8220;confident&#8221;<\/a> in the plans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The Kuwaiti owner said the work so far, costing \u00a3420,000 in fees for studies, surveys, architecture design and consultancy, had changed the picture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">As well as issues with traffic control and transport around the Mem, the limited space available behind the stands would make it &#8220;extremely difficult&#8221; to proceed and increase the capacity without cutting into the parking capacity available.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;I am really taking it seriously and I have spoken about that and our intention, we have always said, is that this club deserves a better infrastructure, a better stadium all the way,&#8221; AlSaeed said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;What we are looking at now is if there is any other way to try to make it a better stadium than what we have, is it worth the money that we&#8217;re going to spend to make that improvement, would that be good enough for the club? <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;[Those are] All of the questions we are faced with and we are really taking careful study and consultation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The proposals also include upgrading the training facilities known as &#8216;The Quarters&#8217; which AlSaeed said Rovers were continuing to meet the council to discuss.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Rovers&#8217; various stadium plans over the years have come to no fruition.
