Business for all titles yesterday was +69% over New Year\u2019s Eve when business, of course, recessed. <\/p>\n

\n\t20th Century Studios\u2019 Avatar: Fire and Ash<\/a> <\/strong>cashed in $15.7M<\/strong>, +94% from New Year\u2019s Eve. By comparison, Avatar: Way of Water made $24.5M on New Year\u2019s Day 2023, while the original Avatar rang up $25.2M back on Jan. 1, 2010. Last year, the Disney prequel Mufasa led all titles on New Year\u2019s Day with $10.3M. Running cume for Fire and Ash in U.S.\/Canada stands at $266M<\/strong>. Global stands at $935M<\/strong> after a $53M worldwide New Year\u2019s Day take with $1 billion running cume imminent. At $121.8M, China reps 13% of Fire and Ash\u2018s current haul. Of course, the James Cameron movie will rule again in its third go-round, but there\u2019s some heat gaining in Paramount\u2019s monkey-gone-wild genre movie, Primate on Jan. 9; horror always a good genre to roll the dice on in early January. The Walter Hamada produced movie is best in first choice with men over 25. <\/p>\n

\n\tIn terms of Christmas Eve to New Year\u2019s Eve admissions, EntTelligence reports that 30% was generated by Avatar: Fire and Ash, 12% by Zootopia 2, 10% by A24\u2019s Marty Supreme<\/a>, 8% by Sony\u2019s Anaconda, and 8% by Angel Studio\u2019s David. <\/p>\n

\n\tCurrently, the Comscore-reported 2025 domestic box office total is at $8.87 billion, up 1.5% from 2024. The data org will announce an updated figure sometime next week after all residuals are in. In 2023, ironically a year that was impacted by strikes yet had the power of Barbie and Oppenheimer, continues to stand as the highest-grossing domestic year at the annual B.O. post-Covid with $9.04 billion.<\/p>\n

\n\tWe told you<\/a> that despite many forecasting a $9B year for 2025, that the year would fall short of that mark.<\/p>\n

\n\tSays Comscore Head of Marketplace Trends, Paul Dergarabedian: \u201cAs we wrap a box office year that delivered its share of ups and downs including a rather slow first quarter followed by a huge month of April, a record-breaking Memorial [Day] weekend and a post-summer corridor offered up a decade\u2019s low month of October. The final two months of the year boasted a solid Thanksgiving frame and finally a very strong push to the end of the year with an eclectic mix of movies for every demographic in December. Big drivers in \u201825 were PG-rated films that for the second year in a row outgrossed their PG-13 counterparts, and the horror genre which had a record year scaring up over $1.4 billion in box office domestically. In the wake of all that tumult, \u201826 has its sights set on grabbing up the highest annual box office haul since 2020 with some of the biggest movie franchises, filmmakers and stars heading for the multiplex throughout the year.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWorldwide, Avatar: Fire and Ash stands north of $860M; it\u2019s bound to become Disney\u2019s third 2025 theatrical release to cross $1 billion after Zootopia 2 and Lilo & Stitch. <\/p>\n

\n\tThat running total is currently pacing 26% behind 2022\u2019s Avatar: Way of Water over the same span (13 days), that sequel ending its run in North America at $684M during its initial release, not counting rerelease monies). Fire and Ash\u2018s 13-day cume is pacing 7% behind the original 2009 pic\u2019s total at the same point in time, which was $268.8M (the initial final run of the first Avatar was $749.9M).<\/p>\n

\n\tNote, by New Year\u2019s Eve, Avatar: Way of Water had been in theaters for 16 days. Way of Water\u2018s New Year\u2019s Eve total was $18M, while the original Avatar grossed $14.7M on that day. <\/p>\n

\n\tIn the U.S. and Canada, New Year\u2019s Eve always takes an ease before spiking today, which is similar trajectory to business on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. As such, all movies on New Year\u2019s Eve grossed around $28.7M<\/strong>, off 38% from Tuesday\u2019s estimated $46.4M.<\/p>\n

\n\tRemember, the money made by Stranger Things: Finale, which began Thursday at 5 p.m. ET and runs through today, is concession cash, not box office money. All we know is that two days before opening, 1.1 million seats were sold<\/a> at 620-plus theaters stateside, which is 700,000 shy of the 1.7M tickets that Sony\/Crunchyroll\u2019s Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle had in the bank the Monday before its opening Friday (why that comp? It\u2019s also a fan-driven title, granted non-Netflix).<\/p>\n

\n\tExhibitors and distribution heads have nothing to complain about when Christmas and New Year\u2019s Day fall on a Thursday: They gain an extra weekend of moviegoing. <\/p>\n
