The Liverpool City Region is playing host to a crucial by-election that could have major national ramifications. On Thursday voters across the constituency of Runcorn and Helsby <\/a>went to the polls to elect a new Member of Parliament for their area.<\/p>\n The election was triggered following the resignation of former MP Mike Amesbury who was convicted of assaulting a constituent after a drunken night out in Frodsham last year.<\/a> Labour held this newly created seat comfortably at last year’s general election, securing more than 50% of the overall vote.
