Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov\u00a0said<\/a> Wednesday that Ukraine should engage directly with Moscow on peace negotiations rather than rely on U.S. mediation.<\/p>\n

\u201cAmerica is trying to mediate, and we\u2019re grateful to the United States for these truly intense efforts,\u201d Peskov told reporters.\u00a0\u201c[But] a peace agreement should be signed with Ukraine, not with America.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Peskov\u00a0suggested<\/a> that ending the war according to Washington\u2019s exceedingly short timeline would be \u201ctoo complicated, with many issues and details still to be resolved before settlement.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPresident Putin\u2019s mission is to achieve the goals he set when he began the special military operation. We must safeguard our national interests,\u201d he said. \u201cWe don\u2019t hear any reaction from Kyiv. The process continues.\u201d<\/p>\n

U.S. President Donald Trump had previously vowed to end the Ukraine war \u201cwithin 24 hours\u201d of taking office, but his push for peace in Ukraine has so far produced few results.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned that Washington could drop its mediation efforts unless both Russia and Ukraine offer \u201cconcrete proposals.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Monday, Putin announced a 72-hour ceasefire next week to coincide with Russia\u2019s Victory Day celebrations, a plan Kyiv has dismissed as a symbolic gesture aimed at buying time on the battlefield. Earlier, the Kremlin leader rejected a 30-day ceasefire proposed by the U.S. and supported by Ukraine.<\/p>\n

Kremlin officials\u00a0have\u00a0argued<\/a>\u00a0that Kyiv must \u201cundertake efforts\u201d toward resuming peace negotiations with Moscow, adding that \u201cthey [in Ukraine] have a legal ban on negotiations,\u201d a reference to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky\u2019s\u00a02022\u00a0decree<\/a>\u00a0that rules direct talks with Russia \u201cimpossible\u201d as long as Putin remains in power.<\/p>\n

However,\u00a0Zelensky said in February that he was ready<\/a> for direct talks with Russia once Kyiv reached a common stance with its Western allies on how to end the war.<\/p>\n

Trump also\u00a0called for<\/a> direct talks between Zelensky and Putin, though the Russian president\u00a0ruled out<\/a> speaking directly with his Ukrainian counterpart in January over concerns about his \u201clegitimacy.\u201d<\/p>\n
