Two teenagers stepped in to grit icy streets in Bartley Green after residents woke up to find roads untreated following snowfall across the city\"HasburyHasbury Road in Bartley Green(Image: Google)<\/p>\n

Two teenagers have taken matters into their own hands to help keep drivers safe during snowy conditions – by gritting the streets.<\/p>\n

A boy and a girl, living in Bartley Green, reportedly filled a wheelie bin with salted sand taken from a yellow council grit bin before setting out to treaty icy roads in their area.<\/p>\n

The pair went on to grit “treacherous” Hasbury Road and surrounding streets yesterday, January 2, after snow swept across the city this week.<\/p>\n

The teenagers have since been praised online for stepping in to help their community after “watching people struggle”.<\/p>\n

Birmingham City Council<\/a> was criticised by locals in the area who woke up to find their streets ungritted following the snowfall.<\/p>\n

Writing on neighbourhood website Nextdoor under the username ‘HUI Macdonald’, a resident said: “I want to give a round of applause to two young teenagers, a boy and girl, who today got a wheelie bin and filled it with salted sand from a yellow council box.<\/p>\n

“They then proceeded to grit Hasbury Road in Bartley Green and some of the adjoining roads.<\/p>\n

“Hasbury road in particular was treacherous – as the lazy council didn’t grit any of the area.<\/p>\n

“These two teenagers need a round of applause for doing something off their own backs after watching people struggle. I don’t know their names, but I will endeavour to find out.”<\/p>\n

Others were also quick to praise the pair in the comments beneath the post.<\/p>\n

Sabina Heywood said: “This is so heart-warming to hear. These two took the initiative and are obviously very caring, thoughtful and intelligent.”<\/p>\n

Madhu Sharma wrote: “Very well done then teens. I take my hat off to you both.<\/p>\n

“You make your parents very proud. Good press for teens.”<\/p>\n

Janet Collins added: “Well done you two. An example to your peers.”<\/p>\n
