{"id":671755,"date":"2026-01-03T19:15:13","date_gmt":"2026-01-03T19:15:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/671755\/"},"modified":"2026-01-03T19:15:13","modified_gmt":"2026-01-03T19:15:13","slug":"russia-iran-slam-venezuela-strikes-as-eu-and-uk-urge-respect-for-international-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/671755\/","title":{"rendered":"Russia, Iran slam Venezuela strikes as EU and UK urge respect for &#8216;international law&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Britain and the European Union urged respect for \u201cinternational law\u201d on Saturday after the US launched a large-scale assault on Venezuela and announced the capture of its leader Nicolas Maduro, drawing condemnation from his allies in Latin America, Russia and Iran, as well as from Lebanon\u2019s Hezbollah.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe EU has repeatedly stated that Mr. Maduro lacks legitimacy and has defended a peaceful transition\u201d in Venezuela, the 27-nation bloc\u2019s top diplomat Kaja Kallas wrote on X after speaking with her US counterpart Marco Rubio. \u201cUnder all circumstances, the principles of international law and the UN Charter must be respected. We call for restraint.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kallas said the EU was closely monitoring the fast-moving situation and that she had spoken to the bloc\u2019s envoy to Venezuela, with the safety of EU citizens \u201cour top priority.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>EU Council President Ursula von der Leyen said she was following developments \u201cvery closely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe stand by the people of Venezuela and support a peaceful and democratic transition. (AP Photo\/Matias Delacroix)<\/p>\n<p>Neither the EU nor the UK has recognized the results of the disputed 2024 election that handed Maduro a third term in power. Both have slapped sanctions on dozens of Venezuelan officials for undermining democracy in the country.<\/p>\n<p>But they have stopped short of formally recognizing 2024 opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia as Venezuela\u2019s rightful leader, as the United States has done.<\/p>\n<p>Gonzalez Urrutia ran as a last-minute stand-in for opposition figurehead Maria Corina Machado, who was barred from contesting last year\u2019s election. After the vote, Gonzalez Urrutia fled Venezuela for Madrid \u2014 which offered to act as mediator after Maduro\u2019s capture on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpain calls for de-escalation and moderation, and for action to always be taken in accordance with international law and the principles of the UN Charter,\u201d the Spanish government said. \u201cIn this regard, Spain is willing to offer its good offices to achieve a peaceful and negotiated solution to the current crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Venezuela\u2019s allies cry foul<\/p>\n<p>The US assault on Venezuela came after the Trump administration spent months escalating pressure on Maduro. The CIA was behind a drone strike last week at a docking area believed to have been used by Venezuelan drug cartels \u2014 the first known direct operation on Venezuelan soil since the US began strikes at sea in September. The US accuses Maduro of running a drug cartel.<\/p>\n<p>Russia, a Venezuelan ally, accused the US of unprovoked aggression and expressed support for a statement by Venezuelan authorities and Latin American leaders calling for an immediate meeting of the UN Security Council.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis morning, the United States committed an act of armed aggression against Venezuela. This is deeply concerning and condemnable,\u201d Moscow\u2019s foreign ministry said. \u201cThe pretexts used to justify such actions are unfounded. (Alexander NEMENOV \/ AFP)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the current situation, it is important, first and foremost, to prevent further escalation and to focus on finding a way out of the situation through dialogue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLatin America must remain a zone of peace,\u201d said the statement. \u201cVenezuela must be guaranteed the right to determine its own destiny without any destructive, let alone military, interference from outside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Iran\u2019s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei called for \u201cresistance\u201d against the US assault in Venezuela, a day after Trump said the US was \u201clocked and loaded\u201d to strike Iran if it kills peaceful protesters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat matters is that when a person realizes the enemy is arrogantly trying to impose something on the country, on the officials, on the government, and on the nation, one must stand firmly against the enemy and bare one\u2019s chest in resistance. We will not yield to the enemy,\u201d said Khamenei. \u201cRelying on Almighty God, trusting in God, and with confidence in the support of the people, God willing and by divine grace, we will bring the enemy to its knees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Hezbollah terror group, a member of Iran\u2019s so-called Axis of Resistance network of regional anti-Israel proxies, said it \u201ccondemns the terrorist aggression and American thuggery against the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHezbollah further affirms its full solidarity with Venezuela \u2014 its people, presidency, and government \u2014 in confronting this American aggression and arrogance,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/static-cdn.toi-media.com\/www\/uploads\/2026\/01\/AP26003388650698-e1767442735528.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3725855\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/AP26003388650698-e1767442735528-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n\t\tIn this photo released by an official website of the office of the Iranian supreme leader, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei speaks in a meeting, in Tehran, Iran, January 3, 2026. (Office of the Iranian Supreme Leader via AP)<\/p>\n<p>Left-wing Latin American governments also assailed the US strikes.<\/p>\n<p>Mexico said any form of military action \u201cseriously jeopardizes regional stability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mexico \u201cstrongly condemns and rejects the military actions carried out unilaterally in recent hours by the armed forces of the United States of America against targets on the territory of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela,\u201d the foreign ministry said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Brazil\u2019s veteran leftist president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said the US strike crossed\u00a0\u201can unacceptable line.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese acts represent a grave affront to\u00a0Venezuela\u2019s sovereignty and yet another extremely dangerous precedent for the entire international community,\u201d Lula said in a post on X.<\/p>\n<p>Lula had previously said that an armed intervention in Venezuela would be a \u201chumanitarian catastrophe,\u201d and has offered to mediate disputes between the countries.<\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/static-cdn.toi-media.com\/www\/uploads\/2025\/10\/AP25298090777698-e1767447895326.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3673274\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/AP25298090777698-e1767447895326-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n\t\tBrazilian President Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva listens to a speech by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, unseen, during a meeting in Putrajaya, Malaysia, October 25, 2025. (AP Photo\/Vincent Thian, Pool)<\/p>\n<p>Colombian President Gustavo Petro warned of \u201cescalation of tension in the region.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Colombia \u201cviews with deep concern the reports of explosions and unusual air activity in recent hours in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, as well as the resulting escalation of tension in the region,\u201d he said. \u201cThe Colombian government rejects any unilateral military action that could aggravate the situation or put the civilian population at risk.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Trump\u2019s right-wing allies in South America celebrated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFREEDOM MOVES FORWARD. LONG LIVE FREEDOM DAMN IT,\u201d Argentina\u2019s Javier Milei wrote on X.<\/p>\n<p>In an appended video, Miliei could be seen previously talking at a summit and describing Maduro as a threat to the region and backing the pressure Trump was putting on Caracas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe time to have a timid approach on this subject has passed,\u201d Milei said there.<\/p>\n<p>Ecuador\u2019s President Gabriel Noboa said \u201cthe time is coming for all the narco-Chavista criminals,\u201d referring to Maduro\u2019s patron and predecessor, Hugo Chavez, who took power in Venezuela in 1999 and declared the country a socialist \u201cBolivarian Republic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir structure will finally collapse across the entire continent,\u201d wrote Noboa on X. \u201cTo Corina Machado, Edmundo Gonzalez, and the Venezuelan people: it is time to reclaim your country.
