{"id":671842,"date":"2026-01-03T20:14:11","date_gmt":"2026-01-03T20:14:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/671842\/"},"modified":"2026-01-03T20:14:11","modified_gmt":"2026-01-03T20:14:11","slug":"chewit-well-mummers-raise-hundreds-touring-yorkshire-pubs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/671842\/","title":{"rendered":"Chewit Well Mummers raise hundreds touring Yorkshire pubs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;It is a play that dates from the time of Downton Abbey, when the villagers would do a little play around Christmastime and go around the big houses and collect money for a few drinks, get mince pies and things like that,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The mummers dress in disguises before touring pubs performing a play that represents the coming of the new year and singing folk songs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;At the time they used to sew ribbons on to their jackets or turn them inside out,&#8221; said Mr Carter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;My wife made mine in about 1979, when I first started.
