Donald Trump<\/a> broke the ice during crucial talks with Sir Keir Starmer<\/a> by talking about King Charles.<\/p>\n The US President sent a friendly message to the monarch as he spoke with the PM ahead of a\u00a025% tax on car imports\u00a0and threats of wider tariffs on other goods this week.<\/p>\n During the phone<\/a> call, the politician passed on his best wishes to King Charles, who had to cancel a recent engagement due to side effects from his cancer treatment<\/a>.<\/p>\n His Majesty was spotted leaving Clarence House for the first time since he was hospitalised<\/a> for \u2018a short period of observation\u2019.<\/p>\n \t\t Following reports about Charles\u2019 health, a Downing Street spokesperson said: \u2018The prime minister spoke to president Trump this evening. <\/p>\n \t\t\t\tSign up to Metro’s politics newsletter, Alright Gov?\t\t\t<\/p>\n Craig Munro<\/a> breaks down Westminster chaos into easy to follow insight, walking you through what the latest policies mean to you. Sign up here.<\/a><\/p>\n \u2018The president opened by wishing His Majesty the King best wishes and good health.\u2019<\/p>\n Number 10 has only a few days to negotiate an exemption from tariffs on imports into the US.<\/p>\n Trump<\/a> announced a 25% import tax will be introduced on all cars imported to the US, a measure expected to hit British luxury car makers such as Rolls-Royce and Aston Martin.<\/p>\n The levy is on top of a series of tariffs set to come into effect on the same date, which could include a general 20% tax on UK products in response to the rate of VAT.<\/p>\n \t\t Trump has branded April 2 \u2018Liberation Day\u2019 for America, as he claimed the tariffs he plans to introduce will free the US from foreign goods and boost its domestic economy.<\/p>\n But Britain is arguing that \u2013 unlike other countries \u2013 it has a relatively equal trading relationship with the US. <\/p>\n Sir Keir has stressed he does not want to jump into a trade war, but he has said the UK \u2018reserves the right\u2019 to introduce reciprocal tariffs on the US.<\/p>\n Talks between the two leaders are said to be intense, with moves to drop or even abolish a British tax on US big tech firms among the bargaining chips.<\/p>\n \u2018They discussed the productive negotiations between their respective teams on a UK-US economic prosperity deal, agreeing that these will continue at pace this week,\u2019 the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n Earlier this morning, home secretary Yvette Cooper told Sky News the government is \u2018acting in the national interest\u2019.<\/p>\n \t\t She said: \u2018We obviously can\u2019t keep a running commentary on different discussions that are taking place, but we have to always make sure that we\u2019re acting in the national interest.\u2019<\/p>\n Trump has now threatened to lump huge sanctions on Russia<\/a> after his relationship with Putin turned sour over the weekend.<\/p>\n He said he is \u2018very angry\u2019 and \u2018pissed off\u2019 over Putin\u2019s recent attack on Volodymyr Zelensky.<\/p>\n The President threatened the Kremlin with secondary tariffs of 25% to 50% on all Russian oil if ceasefire negotiations continue to hit a brick wall.<\/p>\n Got a story?
