{"id":672138,"date":"2026-01-03T23:29:18","date_gmt":"2026-01-03T23:29:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/672138\/"},"modified":"2026-01-03T23:29:18","modified_gmt":"2026-01-03T23:29:18","slug":"i-did-the-duke-of-edinburghs-award-at-16-and-it-really-helped-me-with-my-mental-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/672138\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;I did the Duke of Edinburgh\u2019s Award at 16 and it really helped me with my mental health&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The late Prince Philip established The Duke of Edinburgh\u2019s Award in 1956 for the \u201cbalanced development\u201d of young people\u2019s character.<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/0_SE-Trust-1-Credit-SE-Trustjpeg.jpg\" alt=\"The South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust recently began delivering the DofE\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>The South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust recently began delivering the DofE<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Since its conception 70 years ago, the Duke of Edinburgh\u2019s Award (DofE) reaches 15.5 million young people globally, with over 8.5 million young people having started a DofE Award in the UK \u2013 enough people to fill Belfast\u2019s <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.belfastlive.co.uk\/all-about\/sse-arena\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">SSE Arena<\/a> 758 times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">In 2024\/25, 10,157 young people actively took part in the DofE in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.belfastlive.co.uk\/all-about\/northern-ireland\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">Northern Ireland<\/a>. Supported by Belfast Activity Centre, the group of young people with cared for experience, pulled on their walking shoes and backpacks to scale the Divis and Mourne Mountains as part of their Duke of Edinburgh\u2019s Award expedition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">A 16-year-old participant in the<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.belfastlive.co.uk\/all-about\/south-eastern-trust\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\"> South Eastern Trust<\/a>, who recently completed their Bronze Award said: \u201cAchieving the Award has meant a lot to me in terms of the skills I have learnt and the new people I\u2019ve met. I have done so much more than I thought I could. It\u2019s not easy but the people really support you.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cMy Residential Support and Engagement Team (ReSET) worker really helped me. The expedition was amazing &#8211; it really helped me with my <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.belfastlive.co.uk\/all-about\/mental-health\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">mental health<\/a>. It is such a truly remarkable accomplishment that reflects their dedication, their resilience and their strength. The Award is not easy, it demands commitment, teamwork and the courage to step outside their comfort zone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cOur children and our young people have learnt a host of new skills and made lasting friendships that will carry them into adulthood and the next stage of their lives. I had diligently packaged it, seasoned it and pan-fried it in butter \u2013 delicious.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cIn my mind, a fillet steak seemed like the perfect outdoor meal \u2014 portable, practical and protein-rich!
