{"id":673071,"date":"2026-01-04T10:15:23","date_gmt":"2026-01-04T10:15:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/673071\/"},"modified":"2026-01-04T10:15:23","modified_gmt":"2026-01-04T10:15:23","slug":"studio-weave-completes-woolwich-market-pavilion-in-southeast-london","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/673071\/","title":{"rendered":"Studio Weave completes Woolwich Market Pavilion in southeast London"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Stepped arches define the facade of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/studio-weave\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Studio Weave<\/a>&#8216;s latest building, a brick pavilion containing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/cafes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cafe<\/a>, public <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/toilets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">toilets<\/a> and market facilities.<\/p>\n<p>Woolwich Market Pavilion is part of the rejuvenation of Beresford Square Market, a square next to the gatehouse of the historic former munitions factory, Woolwich Arsenal, in southeast <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/london\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">London<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2283187 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/woolwich-pavilion-studio-weave_dezeen_2364_col_4-852x1065.jpg\" alt=\"Woolwich Market Pavilion and Garden by Studio Weave and Tom Massey\" width=\"1891\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Woolwich Market Pavilion fronts a newly installed garden<\/p>\n<p>With its deep stepped arches and monumental chimneys, the pavilion was designed by London-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.studioweave.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Studio Weave<\/a> to echo the architectural details of the gatehouse and other surrounding buildings.<\/p>\n<p>Its brick walls sit above a plinth of polished red concrete-aggregate blocks, while the window and door frames were made from solid oak.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2283190 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/woolwich-pavilion-studio-weave_dezeen_2364_col_7-852x1065.jpg\" alt=\"Brickwork of Woolwich Market Pavilion by Studio Weave\" width=\"1891\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Windows and doors sit within stepped brick arches<\/p>\n<p>Other distinctive features include a butterfly roof, defined by a ridgeline that runs diagonally between two corners. This gives an angled roofline to all four facades, while also framing the turret of the gatehouse.<\/p>\n<p>The southwest and southeast facades both feature a trio of arches, creating windows and entrances for the yet-to-open cafe facing the market and a newly installed garden.<\/p>\n<p>The northwest facade features just one arch, giving the cafe another entrance on Beresford Street, while a larger arch on the northeast elevation integrates entrances to the two public toilets and a utility room for the market.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2283189 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/woolwich-pavilion-studio-weave_dezeen_2364_col_6-852x1065.jpg\" alt=\"Chimney of Woolwich Market Pavilion by Studio Weave\" width=\"1891\" height=\"2364\"  \/>The building provides a cafe and public toilets<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The architecture has to work hard \u2013 it provides an important social gathering space in the caf\u00e9, a backdrop for the life of the market, while offering dignity for the public who use the space,&#8221; said Eddie Blake, co-director of Studio Weave.<\/p>\n<p>Blake pointed\u00a0out the importance of providing public toilets, &#8221; a public good&#8221;, in urban centres.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ultimately, without accessible public toilets, we are excluding many people from places like Beresford Square,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2283184 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/woolwich-pavilion-studio-weave_dezeen_2364_col_1-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Angled facade of Woolwich Market Pavilion by Studio Weave\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"  \/>The roof is topped by two monumental chimneys, one taller than the other<\/p>\n<p>The Beresford Square Market transformation was delivered by the local authority, Royal Borough of Greenwich, with funding from the UK government&#8217;s Levelling Up Fund, an initiative launched in 2020 under former prime minister Boris Johnson.<\/p>\n<p>Studio Weave developed the wider landscaping in collaboration with landscape designer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tommassey.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tom Massey<\/a>, continuing a partnership that has produced two gold medal-winning gardens at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/chelsea-flower-show\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chelsea Flower Show<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/11\/11\/studio-weave-south-barn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/south-barn-studio-weave-architecture-converted-house-residential-isle-of-wight-extra_dezeen_1704_sq2.jpeg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"South Barn by Studio Weave\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> Studio Weave designs kitchen as &#8220;piece of public realm&#8221; at South Barn in England\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The garden occupies the northwest corner of the site, designed to form a &#8220;soft green buffer&#8221; to the adjacent dual carriageway.
