{"id":673211,"date":"2026-01-04T11:56:10","date_gmt":"2026-01-04T11:56:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/673211\/"},"modified":"2026-01-04T11:56:10","modified_gmt":"2026-01-04T11:56:10","slug":"power-back-for-many-berliners-but-others-freeze-on-dw-01-04-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/673211\/","title":{"rendered":"Power back for many Berliners, but others freeze on \u2013 DW \u2013 01\/04\/2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Electricity has been restored to thousands of households in the southwest of the German capital, <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/berlin\/t-18967759\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Berlin<\/a>, after a power outage hit\u00a0some 45,000 homes and 2,220\u00a0businesses on Saturday, the grid operator said on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;By 3:23 a.m. (0223 UTC\/GMT) on 4 January, we had been able to restore power to around 7,000 households and 150 businesses in several stages, particularly in the Lichterfelde area,&#8221;\u00a0Stromnetz Berlin announced on its website overnight.<\/p>\n<p>Suspected malicious act<\/p>\n<p>The partial restoration of power means that some 38,000 homes and more than 2,000 businesses remain without electricity in the district of Steglitz-Zehlendorf, with Stromnetz Berlin saying it could take until Thursday afternoon to remedy the problem completely.<\/p>\n<p>The outage, which leaves many of those homes without heating, comes as the city is experiencing a bout of very cold winter weather.<\/p>\n<p>The affected district contains several care homes and medical facilities. Emergency services have transferred residents from at least\u00a0two homes for the elderly.<\/p>\n<p>The loss of power was caused by a fire at a cable link over the Teltow Canal that police are investigating as a possible arson attack after a letter sent to authorities claimed responsibility.<\/p>\n<p>A spokeswoman for Berlin&#8217;s Senator for Economic Affairs Franziska Giffey said authorities believed that a malicious act was behind the fire.<\/p>\n<p>The authenticity of the letter is being examined, but no group has been identified as a possible perpetrator so far.<\/p>\n<p>However, Berlin&#8217;s state premier, Mayor Kai Wegner of Chancellor <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/friedrich-merz\/t-60575802\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Friedrich Merz<\/a>&#8216;s conservative <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/christian-democratic-union-cdu\/t-17351950\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Christian Democrats (CDU)<\/a>, said the culprits were &#8220;obviously left-wing extremists,&#8221; whom he accused of endangering people&#8217;s lives with their actions.<\/p>\n<p><img data-format=\"MASTER_LANDSCAPE\" data-id=\"75376578\" data-url=\"https:\/\/static.dw.com\/image\/75376578_${formatId}.jpg\" data-aspect-ratio=\"16\/9\" alt=\"b Bridge over a canal with patches of snow on the banks under a grey, overcast sky\" style=\"padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: 0; max-height: 0;\"\/>The fire occurred on a bridge carrying cables over the Teltow CanalImage: Michael Kappeler\/dpa\/picture alliance<\/p>\n<p>Police call for better surveillance<\/p>\n<p>The head of the Berlin branch of the\u00a0GdP police union, Stephan Weh, called the attack &#8220;senseless&#8221; and without any legitimation, &#8220;even if the suspected arsonists again throw together all sorts of hypocritical reasons in a pamphlet on the end of the world.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He called for an &#8220;unideological&#8221; debate on video surveillance in view of the fact that so many thousands of people were affected.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Cameras mounted on electricity poles could help investigations but also have a preventive effect.
