{"id":673335,"date":"2026-01-04T13:24:11","date_gmt":"2026-01-04T13:24:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/673335\/"},"modified":"2026-01-04T13:24:11","modified_gmt":"2026-01-04T13:24:11","slug":"us-attack-on-venezuela-raises-fears-of-future-greenland-takeover-greenland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/673335\/","title":{"rendered":"US attack on Venezuela raises fears of future Greenland takeover | Greenland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The US bombardment of Venezuela and the capture of its president, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/nicolas-maduro\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nicol\u00e1s Maduro<\/a>, have renewed fears of an American takeover of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/greenland\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Greenland<\/a>, as members of Donald Trump\u2019s Maga movement gleefully set their sights on the Danish territory after the attack in South America.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Just hours after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/jan\/03\/why-trump-us-attacked-caracas-captured-venezuela-president-nicolas-maduro\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">US military operation in Venezuela<\/a>, the rightwing podcaster <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/dec\/13\/katie-miller-podcast-review\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Katie Miller<\/a> \u2013<strong> <\/strong>the wife of Stephen Miller, Donald Trump\u2019s powerful deputy chief of staff for policy \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/KatieMiller\/status\/2007541679293944266\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">posted on X<\/a> a map of Greenland draped in the stars and stripes with the caption: \u201cSOON.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The threat to annex the mineral-rich territory, which is part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/nato\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nato<\/a> alliance, drew immediate outrage from Danes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Copenhagen\u2019s ambassador to the US, Jesper M\u00f8ller S\u00f8rensen, reposted Miller\u2019s provocation with a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DKambUSA\/status\/2007607563601273179\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">friendly reminder<\/a>\u201d of the longstanding defence ties between the two countries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe are close allies and should continue to work together as such. US security is also Greenland\u2019s and Denmark\u2019s security,\u201d he said. \u201cThe Kingdom of Denmark and the United States work together to ensure security in the Arctic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/denmark\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Denmark<\/a> had increased defence spending in 2025, committing $13.7bn (\u00a310.2bn) \u201cthat can be used in the Arctic and North Atlantic. Because we take our joint security seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He added: \u201cAnd yes, we expect full respect for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Trump recently named Jeff Landry, the governor of Louisiana, as a special envoy to Greenland. Landry, a former state attorney general, thanked Trump for his appointment in December, saying it was \u201can honour to serve you in this volunteer position to make Greenland a part of the US\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">On Saturday, Landry welcomed Trump\u2019s toppling of Maduro by force.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cHaving served as a sheriff\u2019s deputy and AG, I have seen the devastating effects of illegal drugs on American families. With over 100k opioid-related deaths annually, I am grateful to see a President finally take real action in the war on drugs,\u201d he posted on X.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThank you @realDonaldTrump for holding individuals like Maduro accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Since taking office a year ago, Trump has rattled European allies with his stated designs on Greenland, which is seen as strategically important for defence and as a future source of mineral wealth. It is home to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/mar\/28\/what-is-pituffik-space-base-us-delegation-visit\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">US\u2019s most northerly military base, at Pituffik<\/a>, which Trump\u2019s vice-president, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/apr\/11\/col-susannah-meyers-head-of-us-military-base-greenland-fired-after-jd-vance-visit\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">JD Vance, visited in March<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The US president has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/may\/04\/trump-greenland-denmark-military-force\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">refused to rule out military action<\/a> to gain control of the territory at a time when the US, China and Russia are jockeying for power in the Arctic, a prospect that has triggered widespread condemnation and disquiet on the island itself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI don\u2019t rule it out. I don\u2019t say I\u2019m going to do it, but I don\u2019t rule out anything. No, not there. We need Greenland very badly,\u201d Trump told the US broadcaster NBC in May when asked about a potential takeover by force.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cGreenland is a very small amount of people, which we\u2019ll take care of, and we\u2019ll cherish them, and all of that. But we need that for international security.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In response to a constant drumbeat of threats against the territory, the Danish Defence Intelligence Service last month <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/dec\/12\/danish-intelligence-accuse-the-us-of-using-economic-power-to-assert-will-over-allies\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">labelled the US a security risk<\/a> in a dramatic change in transatlantic relations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The prime ministers of Denmark and Greenland, Mette Frederiksen and Jens-Frederik Nielsen, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/dec\/22\/denmark-summon-us-ambassador-trump-greenland-envoy-appointment\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said at the time<\/a>: \u201cWe have said it very clearly before. Now we say it again. National borders and the sovereignty of states are rooted in international law \u2026 You cannot annex other countries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The vast majority of Greenland\u2019s 57,000 inhabitants want to become independent from Denmark but have no wish to become part of the US, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/jan\/28\/85-of-greenlanders-do-not-want-to-join-us-says-new-poll\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to a poll in January<\/a>.
