{"id":673351,"date":"2026-01-04T13:34:22","date_gmt":"2026-01-04T13:34:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/673351\/"},"modified":"2026-01-04T13:34:22","modified_gmt":"2026-01-04T13:34:22","slug":"andrew-muir-accuses-politicians-of-deliberate-attempt-to-undermine-the-science-over-lough-neagh-the-irish-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/673351\/","title":{"rendered":"Andrew Muir accuses politicians of \u201cdeliberate attempt to undermine the science\u201d over Lough Neagh \u2013 The Irish News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Northern Ireland\u2019s Environment Minister Andrew Muir has accused some politicians of a \u201cdeliberate attempt to undermine the science and evidence\u201d around the ecological crisis at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/lough-neagh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/lough-neagh\/\">Lough Neagh<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">In a wide-ranging interview with the Press Association, the minister also said he thinks it is likely that a private member\u2019s Bill will be brought to the Assembly around the introduction of an independent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/environment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/environment\/\">environment<\/a> protection agency (EPA), after the DUP blocked his plans to create one.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Mr Muir also insisted there would be no change to ambitious emissions targets set out in Northern Ireland\u2019s Climate Change Act.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The Alliance Party minister said he had a number of priorities for 2026, including tackling climate change and improving water quality.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/northern-ireland\/funeral-held-for-young-vibrant-co-tyrone-father-recovered-from-river-in-cork-3KVQU5HBLFCVBBTYCQ42P23HRM\/\" aria-hidden=\"true\" tabindex=\"-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Funeral held for &#x2018;young, vibrant&#x2019; \" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/7U6ABE4PWZLYTOBZ2BFYNE6EGY.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">He said he wanted Executive support for his plans to strengthen regulation enforcement in relation to sewage pollution.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Blue-green algae at Battery Harbour on Lough Neagh near Cookstown in Co Tyrone has resulted in an environmental crisis\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Q2YQMPW7KBOYTP2MVADVBAMVYI.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/>Blue-green algae at Battery Harbour on Lough Neagh near Cookstown in Co Tyrone has resulted in an environmental crisis (Niall Carson\/PA) <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The minister also said work would continue to implement actions in the Lough Neagh Recovery Plan agreed by the Executive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The lough, the UK and Ireland\u2019s largest freshwater lake by surface area, has been blighted by noxious blooms of blue-green algae for the last three summers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The cause has been put down to an excess of nutrients from a number of sources, including waste water, septic tanks and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/farming\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/farming\/\">agriculture<\/a>, exacerbated by climate change and the invasive species Zebra Mussels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Lough Neagh supplies 40% of Northern Ireland\u2019s drinking water and sustains a major eel fishing industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Mr Muir said: \u201cSince taking up office, I\u2019ve been very clear that the situation in Lough Neagh has been a result of decades of neglect and there are no quick fixes.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Minister Andrew Muir at Daera headquarters in Belfast\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/CSLD5ZGPJBNDJKHQ73X7PXVWB4.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"600\"\/>Minister Andrew Muir at Daera headquarters in Belfast <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cIt breaks my heart to see the situation unfold year after year in the lough.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWhat we\u2019ve got to do is take the actions to reduce the level of pollution that\u2019s going into the lough and also to be very conscious of the impact that climate change is having.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThat requires tough decisions in terms of reducing the amount of pollution, whether it\u2019s coming from agricultural sources or in relation to sewage pollution or septic tanks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Asked if he believed the will existed within the powersharing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/stormont\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/stormont\/\">Executive<\/a> to take the decisions he wanted, Mr Muir said \u201ctime will tell\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">He added: \u201cI believe that we should respect the science and evidence that tells us that in terms of remediation of the lough, partly as a result of the sediment and the phosphorus that is absorbed, that this will take decades to remediate.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Blue Green algae detected at Lough Neagh near Antrim Forum.&#10;PICTURE COLM LENAGHAN\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/5Z7SFHQASNASZADCSZ6YO7NXAQ.jpeg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"533\"\/>Blue Green algae detected at Lough Neagh near Antrim Forum.<br \/>\nPICTURE COLM LENAGHAN <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWhen you respect the science and evidence, it delivers lots of inconvenient truths. We should respect those, and then we should take the tough decisions around it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWhat I have seen, particularly in 2025, is a deliberate attempt by some to undermine the science and evidence around this, and I will stand four-square in defence of the scientists who are delivering the facts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWe have peer-reviewed academic research that\u2019s been referred to as \u2018magical figures\u2019. I think that\u2019s grossly insulting to the individuals who have pulled that research together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Mr Muir said Northern Ireland is an \u201coutlier\u201d in being the only part of the UK without an independent EPA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">A recommendation for an EPA was made in a recent review of environmental governance and the minister has repeated his commitment to progress plans to create the body.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Michelle O&#x2019;Neill (left), with Andrew Muir and Emma Little-Pengelly\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/CTJDZ5ASNJKKHL2RJGR7EUDMG4.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/>Michelle O\u2019Neill (left), with Andrew Muir and Emma Little-Pengelly (Rebecca Black\/PA) <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">However, the DUP has consistently raised concerns over how an EPA would be funded and how it would interact with existing regulatory bodies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Mr Muir said: \u201cThis has been with the Executive for a significant period of time. I\u2019ve been told by the DUP the answer is no. There\u2019s no rhyme or reason behind that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cIt is entirely undemocratic that one party can block a proposal which was given quite significant support in the Assembly just before Christmas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThat needs to be progressed, and if it isn\u2019t progressed, it\u2019s very likely that a privately drafted Bill will arrive in the Assembly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI think it\u2019s unfortunate we have to go down that road because one party seeks to block progress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">He added: \u201cIt\u2019s rather bizarre the DUP are prepared to draw a very hard line around the Irish Sea and create a border in relation to environmental protection when the rest of the UK have independent regulators.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">A Climate Change Act was passed by the Northern Ireland Assembly shortly before the institutions entered a period of suspension in 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The legislation sets out the proposed path the region will take to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050, as well as achieving a carbon budget target of a 33% average annual reduction in emissions between 2023 and 2027.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Mr Muir said the targets are \u201cambitious, but achievable\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">He added: \u201cI think it\u2019s regrettable that some political forces, particularly in relation to Nigel Farage or Donald Trump, are taking a very different approach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cBut I\u2019m not led by them. I\u2019m led by the science and the evidence which states that climate change is a reality today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s important we meet that obligation and that we actually confront the opportunities that are also set out for us.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Asked if he would consider reducing the targets, the minister said: \u201cI\u2019m very clear and very consistent that I will not be doing that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">He added: \u201cClimate change is a defining issue of our generation.
