Image depicts a morning and the school day ahead.\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>Tens of thousands of Scots school pupils are skipping class<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">More than 6,000 Scottish school pupils have not attended school in the past six years, according to new figures. And over 70,000 have missed more than half of school since 2019, figures obtained by the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scottishdailyexpress.co.uk\/all-about\/scottish-conservatives\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Scottish ConservativesLink opens in a new tab.\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">Scottish Conservatives<\/a> show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The Tories said the data was \u201cdeeply alarming\u201d and indicated the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scottishdailyexpress.co.uk\/all-about\/snp\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"SNPLink opens in a new tab.\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">SNP<\/a>\u2019s \u201cdesperate failure in education\u201d. The figures showed that 73,184 pupils had an attendance rate of below 50%, while a further 6,270 pupils had no attendance between 2019\/20 and 2024\/25.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The total is likely to be higher as some of the attendance data was incomplete. Conservative MSP Miles Briggs said: \u201cSchool attendance in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scottishdailyexpress.co.uk\/all-about\/scotland\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"ScotlandLink opens in a new tab.\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">Scotland<\/a> is in crisis, and these figures show the truly shocking scale of the problem.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s utterly unacceptable that so many pupils have missed at least half of their schooling \u2013 and truly terrifying that more than 6,000 have not attended <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scottishdailyexpress.co.uk\/all-about\/schools\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"schoolLink opens in a new tab.\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">school<\/a> at all. This is yet another indicator of the SNP\u2019s desperate failure in education.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" to learn is in the classroom, so the fact that thousands are missing school is deeply alarming and risks long-term harm to their education and wellbeing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">A Scottish Government spokesperson said: \u201cIt is hugely encouraging that the latest official statistics show the improvement in attendance and a fall in absences, including a noticeable reduction in persistent absence levels, which reflects the efforts of schools in responding to data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cIt is therefore vitally important that parents and carers ensure that children attend school and should only arrange family holidays during the holiday period.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cNational guidance is clear that education authorities and schools should engage with children, young people and families to support improved attendance and reduce absence, through understanding underlying concerns.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The government said work to refresh national attendance guidance is ongoing with
