But by their nature, trends come and go, so in honor of the new year, we asked top designers what they think will be on the way out in 2026. See what they said below.

The Modern Farmhouse Look

The oh-so-popular modern farmhouse look exudes comfort and coziness, blending contemporary lines with the traditional, rustic touches. (Think reclaimed wooden beams or shiplap walls.) However, the style may have had its moment. Fresh off creating the dazzling, lilac-infused staircase and landings at the Kips Bay Decorator Show House New York, Cathy Purple Cherry of Purple Cherry Architects says the style is on the way out. “The modern farmhouse aesthetic is fading—and I’m relieved to see it go,” she tells ELLE Decor. “Modern farmhouse can be beautiful when executed with authentic materials and thoughtful restraint, but unfortunately, this was not often accomplished.”

imaginima//Getty Images

Neutral Rugs

Rugs play an integral role in tying a room together. They can pull from the surrounding color scheme for added visual intrigue or, in the case of natural materials such as jute or sisal, create a neutral foundation for the decor to take center stage. Atlanta-based designer Laura W. Jenkins prefers the former. “For the last couple of years and for projects going forward, I have been really into patterned rugs versus a texture or simple natural fiber,” she says. “While these solids and textures may still have a place, think about using a patterned rug to bring color and an artful touch to your room.” She points to a custom Christopher Farr rug she deployed in a color-drenched dining room as evidence of the power of artful floor coverings.

Big Built-Ins

Bespoke built-ins were everywhere in 2025—and it’s easy to see why. They maximize space (which is at a premium in most urban settings) and help keep your rooms uncluttered without being too fussy. But designer Ariel Okin, who recently revamped a Brooklyn brownstone for a young family, says the tides might be turning. “Lately we’ve been seeing clients forgoing massive built-ins in exchange for vintage and antique casepieces,” she tells ELLE Decor. “While there’s always a purpose for millwork, scaling back in some instances and instead utilizing a piece with patina for storage is a nice trend we’ve noticed as of late.”

Pattern Mixing

Designer Phillip Thomas of Phillip Thomas Inc. is a pro at masterminding rooms with vibrant colors and dramatic furnishings. Next year, however, he’s hoping designers move away from the all-out-maximalist look that’s been trending lately. “Pattern mixing needs to stay in 2025!” he tells ELLE Decor. “I love a well done, layered moment but there has to be an intention to the pattern mix—elements, colors, textures—that have underlying, unifying elements.” Otherwise, the resulting space can come off as visually chaotic. “The goal should be to have spaces that feel like we brought old elements together with new elements for a collected feel.”

Sebastian Doerken//Getty Images

White-Box Rooms

Don’t tell Pantone, but it looks like the company’s 2026 Color of the Year, a stark-white hue called Cloud Dancer, might not be sparking joy among interior designers. When asked about what she hopes to leave behind in 2025, Sag Harbor designer Allison Babcock has a simple answer: “White rooms!” Indeed, even though Babcock is known for coastal-chic interiors that typically use neutral shades, she hopes rooms with the absence of color don’t proliferate next year. “You can still have your Pantone ‘Cloud Dancer’ moment, but create a tranquil vibe by layering different paint finishes of your chosen neutral color on walls, trim, and ceilings.” She also recommends adding “natural elements like wood and stone as well as soft accessories like cashmere and fur—faux is fab—to create a warmth within the white.”

Designer Melissa Bowers of M.A. Bowers, Inc. agrees. Her hope for next year? “I want design in 2026 to move beyond the sterile white box and toward a timeless, textured future,” she says.
