{"id":674695,"date":"2026-01-05T04:38:11","date_gmt":"2026-01-05T04:38:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/674695\/"},"modified":"2026-01-05T04:38:11","modified_gmt":"2026-01-05T04:38:11","slug":"groups-gather-in-birmingham-to-protest-war-against-venezuela","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/674695\/","title":{"rendered":"Groups gather in Birmingham to protest war against Venezuela"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RRTEI2Q7TZAQHEV6LZM2UUE54M\">Dozens of Birmingham protestors gathered Sunday afternoon in Five Points South to voice their disagreement with President Donald Trump\u2019s weekend order for a military raid into Venezuela and capture of that country\u2019s president.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QHYQ4SXOHVAAXERW256AY4BOSQ\">About <a href=\"https:\/\/www.answercoalition.org\/venezuela\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.answercoalition.org\/venezuela\">100 groups<\/a> across the United States have announced protests against the move, with at least three of those spanning the state in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/news\/2026\/01\/groups-across-alabama-say-no-in-protest-of-venezuela-invasion.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/news\/2026\/01\/groups-across-alabama-say-no-in-protest-of-venezuela-invasion.html\">Huntsville<\/a>, Birmingham and Dothan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"JLSLKWBARRGWLGVKZNDBHYFJWA\">Sunday evening\u2019s protest was a group effort led by the Birmingham Chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), Alabama 50501, Food Not Bombs Birmingham, the Birmingham branch of the Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL), and other local solidarity organizations, according to a news release from DSA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"AERAS2PSMFDBTBOD2MXASCDDPA\">\u201c[On] January 3rd, the Trump administration bombed locations across the Venezuelan capital of Caracas and abducted Venezuelan President Maduro in a naked attempt at regime change,\u201d the release reads. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MO6M6JMFQFHIVAF3KJ4CDKSVKM\">\u201cThese attacks continue Trump\u2019s illegal war on Venezuela, which began with bombings and seizures of Venezuelan vessels in the Caribbean for months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5WFYRRIK6BCKFFFPAUS4OJRGHA\">\u201cTrump\u2019s war on Venezuela aims to control Venezuela\u2019s oil resources through illegal military force and with the help of U.S. energy corporations,\u201d it continues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KKDWBQ3QCRFSDFWAAKALWPODT4\">Trump and other Republican lawmakers have said this weekend that the attack was part of an effort to secure U.S. borders and protect citizens against drug trafficking and narco-terrorism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RWQQREDYB5FJ5I7H6YIC3UBWMA\">But several opponents, including former Trump ally and U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., question the president\u2019s true motivation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6BYDBSRKLNCLDMXZT4GAAUTNMM\">\u201cThe Trump administration claims these military actions, as well as extrajudicial and illegal bombings and seizures of boats in the Caribbean, are to fight \u2018narco-terrorism\u2019 and stop drugs entering the U.S.,\u201d reads DSA\u2019s news release. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"B72DADJUNJFHHM5ENA7AE2QVFA\">\u201cBut Trump and his regime officials have repeatedly emphasized that U.S. control of Venezuelan oil, as well as U.S. domination of Latin America as a whole, are their primary motivation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"63WUAQPSTZDQXBL6GYQMYSHDWM\">Members of the participating groups led protestors in multiple chants against the current administration on Sunday before starting their march around Five Points South.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RQX2F3QLJZD7VL7A5Q6R2RFBRY\">\u201cFascism will not stand in this country,\u201d one went.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LANH2B5K3JDS7IUVFEBWCJ5PXQ\">\u201cEnough is enough. No to war. Yes to peace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"F2QVQZWZPJFNDCFTNVEGHW7KC4\">\u201cNot U.S. land, not U.S. soil, hands of Venezuelan oil,\u201d said another.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QDTPEVN3SRCF5C5LO4J7SBOP6Y\">The United States, in predawn hours on Saturday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/news\/2026\/01\/us-strikes-venezuela-and-says-its-leader-maduro-has-been-captured-and-flown-out-of-the-country.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/news\/2026\/01\/us-strikes-venezuela-and-says-its-leader-maduro-has-been-captured-and-flown-out-of-the-country.html\">bombed<\/a> Caracas, the Venezuelan capital, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/news\/2026\/01\/us-strikes-venezuela-and-says-its-leader-maduro-has-been-captured-and-flown-out-of-the-country.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/news\/2026\/01\/us-strikes-venezuela-and-says-its-leader-maduro-has-been-captured-and-flown-out-of-the-country.html\">captured<\/a> the sitting Venezuelan president Nicol\u00e1s Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"55IPUDYYCVHPFLG4I7XZIHSKAA\">Trump told AP News Saturday that the U.S. would now run Venezuela, at least temporarily, and tap its vast oil reserves to sell to other nations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"D332OE24HRANTJ3Y4GC6SKQU4M\">While Republicans in Congress largely support the decision, Democrats have spoken out against the move, specifically taking issue with a lack of briefing from the administration before the strike<a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/International\/live-updates\/venezuela-live-updates-trump-give-details-after-us\/?id=127792811\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> began<\/a>, according to ABC News.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZQGRF4KXXRECHOK26AWX6YAFYM\">This weekend Andrew Sneed, one of the Democratic candidates running for Alabama\u2019s 5th congressional district seat, called out Rep. Dale Strong, who currently occupies the seat, for his <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepDaleStrong\/status\/2007510271066054961\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepDaleStrong\/status\/2007510271066054961\">support of the move.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IIOGO2BR2JAF5BDDDFK63EAZNM\">\u201cRegardless of the fact that&#8230;Nicolas Maduro was an illegitimate and corrupt leader &#8211; whose actions harmed both our country\u2019s people and his own, Representative Dale Strong either does not understand, or continues to ignore, his responsibility,\u201d Sneed wrote. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4GHSOJHFYRATPIKQWTSR42BMFI\">\u201cAs a member of Congress &#8211; a co-equal branch of Government &#8211; his responsibility is to serve as a check, not a cheerleader, for the Executive.
