{"id":674796,"date":"2026-01-05T05:51:11","date_gmt":"2026-01-05T05:51:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/674796\/"},"modified":"2026-01-05T05:51:11","modified_gmt":"2026-01-05T05:51:11","slug":"anne-frank-stepsister-and-auschwitz-survivor-eva-schloss-dies-aged-96-holocaust","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/674796\/","title":{"rendered":"Anne Frank stepsister and Auschwitz survivor Eva Schloss dies aged 96 | Holocaust"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">King Charles has paid tribute to Anne Frank\u2019s stepsister, Eva Schloss, who has died at the age of 96.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The king, who danced with Schloss while visiting a Jewish community centre in north London in 2022, said he and Queen Camilla had \u201cadmired her deeply\u201d and he was \u201cprivileged and proud\u201d to have known her.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Schloss\u2019s death was confirmed on Saturday in a tribute to her in the Jewish News, in which her family described their \u201cgreat sadness\u201d at the loss of \u201cour dear mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">She was co-founder and honorary president of the Anne Frank Trust, of which the queen is patron.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In a statement, the king said: \u201cMy wife and I are greatly saddened to hear of the death of Eva Schloss.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe horrors that she endured as a young woman are impossible to comprehend and yet she devoted the rest of her life to overcoming hatred and prejudice, promoting kindness, courage, understanding and resilience through her tireless work for the Anne Frank Trust UK and for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/holocaust\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Holocaust<\/a> education across the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe are both privileged and proud to have known her, and we admired her deeply. May her memory be a blessing to us all.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cCharles R.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Schloss grew up under the name Eva Geiringer in Vienna with her parents and brother.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">She later lived at Merwedeplein Square in Amsterdam where she met fellow teenager Anne Frank.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">As the situation in the Netherlands worsened, Schloss and her family moved from house to house for two years to evade capture but they were eventually betrayed by a Nazi sympathiser, who took them in then gave them away.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">On her 15th birthday they were arrested, brutally interrogated and, in May 1944, forced on to trains to the Nazi death camp at Auschwitz.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Schloss and her mother were subsequently separated from her father and brother.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">During their three-day journey to Auschwitz, her brother Heinz told her that he and their father, Erich, had hidden 30 of his paintings under the floorboards of the attic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The sibling\u2019s story was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/lifeandstyle\/2017\/jan\/21\/eva-geiringer-schloss-auschwitz-holocaust-survivor-heinz-paintings\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">subject of an exhibition<\/a> put together at the Jewish Museum in London in 2017.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Schloss later moved to England and lived in London for more than 70 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Auschwitz survivor got married in 1952 to Zvi Schloss and the couple had three daughters: Jacky, Caroline and Sylvia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">When her mother, Elfriede, married Anne Frank\u2019s father, Otto, in 1953, Schloss became Anne Frank\u2019s stepsister.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In 2017, Schloss told the Guardian: \u201cAnne was much more mature and grown-up than me. She attended the Montessori school and was an academic year ahead of me.
