{"id":67499,"date":"2025-05-02T04:40:09","date_gmt":"2025-05-02T04:40:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/67499\/"},"modified":"2025-05-02T04:40:09","modified_gmt":"2025-05-02T04:40:09","slug":"sale-of-32-million-gustav-klimt-portrait-falls-through","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/67499\/","title":{"rendered":"Sale of $32 Million Gustav Klimt Portrait Falls Through"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe sale of a $32 million portrait by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/t\/gustav-klimt\/\" id=\"auto-tag_gustav-klimt\" data-tag=\"gustav-klimt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gustav Klimt<\/a> has fallen through, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.derstandard.at\/story\/3000000208113\/die-lange-reise-des-fr228ulein-lieser\" target=\"_blank\">according to the Austrian paper Der Standard. <\/a>The painting\u2019s anonymous buyer in Hong Kong withdrew from the sale last month after a private restitution settlement did not go ahead. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn 2024, Klimt\u2019s Portrait of Fr\u00e4ulein Lieser (1917) sold for \u20ac30 million, \u20ac35 million with fees, ($32.15 million, $37.51 million with fees), on the lower side of its presale estimate of \u20ac30 to \u20ac50 million. Gaps in its provenance, especially around World War II, resulted in the im Kinsky auction house working to arrange a settlement between the consignor, a private Austrian citizen, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/art-news\/news\/potential-legal-heir-emerges-to-claim-klimt-portrait-sold-in-vienna-1234704826\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the heirs of the Lieser family<\/a> for a share of the sale.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/market\/32-million-klimt-sale-falls-through-2637831\" target=\"_blank\">According to Artnet News<\/a>, the consignor of Portrait of Fr\u00e4ulein Lieser inherited the painting in 2022. However, the decades between 1925, when the black-and white photograph showed the artwork in possession of the Lieser family, and 1961, when Portrait of Fr\u00e4ulein Lieser was recorded in the possession of the consignor\u2019s family were unclear.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIt\u2019s worth noting this period includes the Anschluss, when Austria was annexed by Nazi Germany between 1938 and 1945.
