{"id":676252,"date":"2026-01-05T21:29:12","date_gmt":"2026-01-05T21:29:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/676252\/"},"modified":"2026-01-05T21:29:12","modified_gmt":"2026-01-05T21:29:12","slug":"eu-vote-on-mercosur-trade-deal-with-south-american-nations-takes-place-on-friday-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/676252\/","title":{"rendered":"EU vote on Mercosur trade deal with South American nations takes place on Friday \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A vote to approve a major trade deal between the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-union\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-union\/\">European Union<\/a> and several South American countries is to take place on Friday, teeing up a politically tricky decision for the Government about whether to risk infuriating beef farmers or lose standing in Brussels. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ambassadors from each of the EU\u2019s 27 member states will vote in Brussels on whether to back or reject the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/mercosur\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/mercosur\/\">Mercosur<\/a> trade agreement, with momentum believed to be swinging behind the deal being approved. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Italian government is reported to be leaning towards backing the trade deal, which would secure a large enough majority inside the EU to see the agreement approved, regardless of the opposition from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/france\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/france\">France<\/a>, Ireland and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/poland\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/poland\/\">Poland<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Government sources said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/italy\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/italy\/\">Italy<\/a> would be the \u201cdecisive vote\u201d the deal\u2019s approval swings on. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Irish beef farmers oppose the EU-Mercosur deal because they fear they will be undercut by unfair competition from cheaper South American beef. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The deal, which is more than 25 years in the making, would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2024\/12\/06\/qa-what-is-the-mercosur-trade-deal-and-what-does-it-mean-for-ireland\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2024\/12\/06\/qa-what-is-the-mercosur-trade-deal-and-what-does-it-mean-for-ireland\/\">lower barriers to trade<\/a> between Europe and Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay, opening up big new markets for either side. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-commission\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-commission\/\">European Commission<\/a>, the EU\u2019s executive arm that negotiated the deal, has insisted any knock-on impacts will not be as bad as beef farmers fear. Extra safeguards have been worked into the agreement to give the EU powers to reimpose import duties if South American beef ends up flooding any part of the market and tanking prices. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">European Commission president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ursula-von-der-leyen\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ursula-von-der-leyen\/\">Ursula von der Leyen<\/a> is scheduled to travel to Paraguay to sign the deal on January 12th if the EU\u2019s national capitals give the green light in the coming days. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2024\/12\/06\/qa-what-is-the-mercosur-trade-deal-and-what-does-it-mean-for-ireland\/\">Q&amp;A: What is the Mercosur trade deal and what does it mean for Ireland?<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Geopolitically, the commission views the deal as Europe\u2019s response to the instability caused by US president Donald Trump\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/us-tariffs\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/us-tariffs\/\">tariff<\/a> agenda by broadening economic ties to other regions. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The support of a qualified majority of member states is needed for the EU to approve the trade accord. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The crunch vote had been planned for December, but was postponed to give Italian prime minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/giorgia-meloni\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/giorgia-meloni\/\">Giorgia Meloni<\/a> more time to settle on a position. Bloomberg reported on Monday that the Italian government appeared set to back the trade pact. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Irish Government will have to take a decision on what way it will cast its vote between now and Friday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Voting to reject the trade deal would likely damage Ireland\u2019s standing with the commission and pro-Mercosur governments.
