As freezing weather sweeps Britain hundreds of schoolchildren have enjoyed an unplanned day off with hundreds of schools across the country closed due to the winter weather<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Met Office<\/a> issued new cold weather warnings this afternoon as the mercury dipped below minus 10 in Cumbria overnight.<\/p>\n

Met Office sensors recorded 20. Inches of snow<\/a> in Banffshire in Scotland<\/a>. Yellow warnings are currently in place for the whole of Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile additional warnings have been issued for the east of England and west of Wales, Devon and Cornwall.<\/p>\n

“The UK will continue to experience a range of winter weather hazards through this week, with low temperatures as well as snow showers and the risk of ice for many,\u201d said Met Office Chief Meteorologist, Matthew Lehnert.<\/p>\n

“A number of severe weather warnings have been issued and these are likely to be updated through the week so do keep up to date with the forecast.”<\/p>\n

Hundreds of schools closed for the day on Monday, with parents forced to keep children home as schools in Wales, South West England, Scotland and Northern Ireland shut their doors.<\/p>\n

This afternoon schools have started to announce they will not be opening their doors to students on Tuesday either, with a raft of closures in Northern Ireland announced.<\/p>\n

The UK government has issued guidance to parents who wish to check if their children\u2019s school will be open tomorrow.<\/p>\n

You can check on the gov.uk School closures website here<\/a> by typing in your postcode. This will then take you to the website for your local council which will give you the information you need.<\/p>\n

The cold weather could be set to continue with frontal systems pushing in from the west on Wednesday to Friday bringing with them a mixture of rain, sleet and snow will move across the country at times with a risk of strong winds.<\/p>\n

The forecast for tomorrow (Tuesday January 6) calls for another cold day with a mixture of rain, sleet and snow across the north.
