Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orb\u00e1n said he\u00a0expects Western sanctions on\u00a0Russia to\u00a0be\u00a0lifted by\u00a02027, arguing that the war in\u00a0Ukraine could end by\u00a0then and that EU\u00a0energy restrictions are harmful to\u00a0Hungary, RBC.ua reported, citing Orb\u00e1n\u2019s statement during his annual summary press conference on\u00a0January\u00a05.<\/p>\n

Orb\u00e1n said he\u00a0anticipates<\/a> a\u00a0\u201cbalanced new situation\u201d between Russia and Ukraine emerging by\u00a02027, which he\u00a0believes would lead to\u00a0the removal of\u00a0sanctions.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u00a0hope that by\u00a02027\u00a0the current military situation will end, a\u00a0balanced new situation between Russia and Ukraine will be\u00a0established, and as\u00a0a\u00a0result the sanctions will be\u00a0lifted,\u201d he\u00a0said.<\/p>\n

Orb\u00e1n again criticized the European Union\u2019s plans to\u00a0phase out Russian oil and gas imports, claiming the measures would be\u00a0especially damaging for Hungary. He\u00a0also threatened legal action against the European Commission, saying Budapest plans to\u00a0sue over what he\u00a0described as\u00a0an\u00a0\u201cabuse of\u00a0the legal framework,\u201d according to\u00a0RBC.ua.<\/p>\n

Orb\u00e1n argued that sanctions should be\u00a0treated as\u00a0trade decisions requiring unanimous approval by\u00a0EU\u00a0member states.<\/p>\n

The comments come as\u00a0the EU\u00a0moves ahead with its energy decoupling from Russia. On\u00a0December 17, the European Parliament backed a\u00a0plan to\u00a0gradually end purchases of\u00a0Russian gas by\u00a0the end of\u00a02027.<\/p>\n

Under the proposal, imports of\u00a0Russian liquefied natural gas would be\u00a0banned once new regulations take effect in\u00a0early 2026, while pipeline gas imports would be\u00a0phased out by\u00a0September 30, 2027.<\/p>\n
