Both have their mouths open as they sled down the snow covered hill.\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 hLdNfA\"\/>Pacemaker<\/p>\n<p>Some made the most of the snow day at Cavehill Country Park in Belfast<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">A fresh weather warning for icy conditions in Northern Ireland has come into force as the cold snap continues to cause disruption to schools and transport.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">More than 200 <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cr7jvm8j009o\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 iCaRzc\" rel=\"noopener\">schools in Northern Ireland were closed on Tuesday<\/a> and a number of Translink services were affected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The police have warned that some roads in County Fermanagh are &#8220;impassable due to treacherous icy conditions&#8221; including Moybrone Road, Letterbreen and Tiravally Road, and Florencecourt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">A yellow weather warning for ice ended at 10:00 GMT on Tuesday but a new one is in place from 18:00 until 11:00 on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">A fresh dusting of snow can also be expected in some areas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The Met Office has urged the public to take care on slippery footpaths and untreated roads.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The school closures were mainly in the north east, north west and west of Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/1766890833_711_grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 gUePlo hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/a8927820-eaef-11f0-8a5c-81e1c85f6b52.jpg.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Ruair\u00ed McHugh A lorry stuck across a narrow, ice covered rural road in County Tyrone. With a green tree lit up in the background.\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 hLdNfA\"\/>Emma Tsang<\/p>\n<p>The Tsang family made the most of the snowy weather and built snowmen<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Emma Tsang has three children and lives in the Ballymoney area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">A number of local schools have closed, including those attended by her children, as well as their childcare facility.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Tsang said she respects the decision to close schools, as the safety of children and staff is paramount, but added it was &#8220;not ideal&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s a difficult situation for working parents to organise alternative childcare at short notice,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/1766890833_711_grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 gUePlo hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/11bb87a0-eadd-11f0-97ff-1df4f0d33d7f.png.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Ursula O'Hanlon Ursula O'Hanlon has shoulder length brown hair and is wearing a black printed top and makeup.\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 hLdNfA\"\/>Ursula O&#8217;Hanlon<\/p>\n<p>Ursula O&#8217;Hanlon is the principal of a rural school in County Londonderry<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">St Brigid&#8217;s Primary School in Tirkane in County Londonderry is among the closed schools.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Its principal Ursula O&#8217;Hanlon said the snow and ice has not thawed, and that a decision will be made later on whether the school reopens on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;Nobody wants to be responsible for opening a school and hearing then that someone had an accident,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">O&#8217;Hanlon said she cannot expect parents to get children to school when buses are not servicing local roads.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Difficulty&#8217; treating rural roads<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Paddy Lavery, a principal engineer at the Department of Infrastructure, said there are more than 300 staff members working to keep the main roads open and safe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Lavery said rural schools will always be a &#8220;difficulty&#8221; but there are special arrangements to treat some roads.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">They follow a scoring mechanism to decide where resources will be deployed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">This includes assessing whether there has been a history of snow and ice around the school, if there is a bus with over 40 seats travelling to the school and the number of vehicles travelling to the school.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Lavery said there is an application process for rural roads to be treated, adding that over 50 schools are treated under special arrangements.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Hospital entrances are also treated under these arrangements. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/1766890833_711_grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 gUePlo hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/51746260-eafe-11f0-8e8e-7f477e15473f.jpg.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Three children standing side by side with snowballs in their hands.
