<\/p>\nSir Keir Starmer is preparing to unveil new Brexit legislation that would hand power back to Brussels without needing a vote from MPs or the public.<\/p>\n
The Prime Minister is expected to announce the UK will pursue \u201cdynamic alignment\u201d with the EU under Sir Keir\u2019s \u201creset\u201d with Brussels.<\/p>\n
No10 hopes the deal will underpin the UK\u2019s relationship with the EU after Brussels struck an accord on food standards with Labour last year.<\/p>\n
However, pursuing \u201cdynamic alignment\u201d would mean the UK is bound by EU rules on any issues included in negotiations.<\/p>\n
Brexiteers warn such a concession would mark the first loss of UK sovereignty on standards since Britain\u2019s departure from the EU.<\/p>\n
Despite Britain voting to leave the EU in 2016, such an arrangement would also remove any process of parliamentary or public consent on individual areas subject to \u201cdynamic alignment\u201d.<\/p>\n
Shadow Foreign Secretary Dame Priti Patel said Labour\u2019s \u201cBrexit betrayal\u201d was \u201cbecoming clearer by the day\u201d and accused Sir Keir of \u201ctrying to undo the democratic decision of the British people\u201d.<\/p>\n
However, a Labour source said: \u201cThe bill will give us the powers to share rules with the EU. All international agreements involve shared rules. That\u2019s their very nature.<\/p>\n

Ministers believe closer alignment with the EU will turbocharge economic growth. <\/p>\n
Sir Keir soft-launched the policy over the weekend, although he stopped short of buckling to demands to rejoin the customs union.<\/p>\n

Speaking to the BBC, Sir Keir said: \u201cI think we should get closer, and if it\u2019s in our national interest to have even closer alignment with the single market, then we should consider that, we should go that far.\u201d<\/p>\n
He added: “We\u2019re already aligning on energy, reconnecting to energy in Europe on emissions, but I think the single market further alignment, as I say, if it\u2019s in our interest to do so, we should take that step.”<\/p>\n
Despite admitting he had \u201cargued for a customs union for many years\u201d, the Prime Minister now thinks \u201ca lot of water has now gone under the bridge\u201d and it would no longer be the right approach.<\/p>\n
He also warned a customs union with the EU risks torpedoing the UK’s new trade deals, including the accord negotiated with India.<\/p>\n

However, Reform UK leader Nigel Farage previously argued such a pivot is “breaking faith with his manifesto pledges on the EU”. <\/p>\n
It is not the first time in recent weeks the Prime Minister has been accused of “betraying” Brexit.<\/p>\n
