THE Royal Regiment of Scotland<\/a> will construct a new memorial in Princes Street Gardens<\/a> to commemorate the 20th\u00a0anniversary of its founding in March this year.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Plans were approved in principle by the council<\/a> in August last year<\/a>, but the first images have now been released of the statue in planning documents.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The statue will feature a lion reclining rather than rampant, to portray contemplation of the history of the regiment, which is the only Scottish line infantry regiment in the British Army.\u00a0<\/p>\n

If approved by the council, the lion would join a raft of other statues in Princes Street Gardens, in the shadow of Edinburgh Castle, including memorials to Scotland\u2019s war dead, Wojtek the bear, and the towering The Royal Scots Greys Monument.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The plans already have \u201cin principle\u201d approval from\u00a0the City of Edinburgh Council, but full planning permission for the project is\u00a0required\u00a0before construction can\u00a0commence.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The planning application was\u00a0submitted\u00a0by\u00a0the Royal Regiment of Scotland last month and now awaits assessment by council planners.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The resting lion will face skywards and sit on a 1m tall plinth just off Princes Street Gardens\u2019 main path, next to the Ross Fountain.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The sculpture will be around 2m tall, 3m long, and 1.5m wide.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The regiment has previously expressed its desire to have the statue ready to unveil for the 20th\u00a0anniversary of their founding on 28 March.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Royal Regiment of Scotland was announced in 2004 by then\u00a0defence\u00a0secretary Geoff Hoon as an amalgamation of six different regiments, including the Royal Scots and the King\u2019s Own Scottish Borderers.\u00a0<\/p>\n

This amalgamation will feature in the monument\u2019s design, which will be welded together from six separate pieces.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The formation of the regiment was a part of a larger streamlining of the British Army and reduction in the number of battalions from 40 to 36.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Since its foundation, the regiment has been involved in the ill-fated invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The regiment\u2019s headquarters is Edinburgh Castle.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Kenny Hunter, a Scottish sculptor who lives and works in Edinburgh, and specialises in monumental civic sculpture, was appointed last year to design the monument.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In his justification for the design, he said: \u201cTo reflect on the history and celebrate the Royal Regiment of Scotland, I have chosen to sculpt a\u00a0lion which has a direct relationship to the regiments cap badge.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe memorial will also include the motto\u00a0\u2018nemo me\u00a0lacessit\u00a0impunen.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThis\u00a0lion is depicted reclining not rampant,\u00a0perhaps to\u00a0suggest it is remembering\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0past and contemplating\u00a0its\u00a0future.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cBeyond\u00a0representing\u00a0this animal\u2019s traditional qualities of strength and courage, I have also decided to use the structure and process of making the memorial itself to communicate how the regiment originated from six antecedents.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cTherefore, this sculpture of a reclining\u00a0lion will be cast in six separate sections then welded together to create a unified whole.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cInstead of disguising the seams they will instead become a feature that tells the story of how Scotland\u2019s six historic infantry regiments came together to form a single fighting force.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThis will be further echoed in the construction of the base and plinth, each of which\u00a0comprises\u00a0of six separate stones.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cCollectively this methodology of conjoining will articulate the origins of the Royal Regiment of Scotland, while making the broader point that the whole is greater than the sum of\u00a0its\u00a0parts.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The sculpture will be cast out of bronze, and the plinth will be constructed from grey sandstone \u201cfor their integrity and permanence\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Foundations will from a reinforced concrete slap and hardcore fill, and a \u201cgenerous\u201d paved area around the memorial will surround the monument and intersect with the existing tarmac path through the gardens.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The council has until 9 February to decide upon the application.<\/p>\n
