data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">One of Birmingham\u2019s striking bin workers has said union members are \u201cdetermined\u201d to fight on as the bins strike reaches the one year milestone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The bins strike, which started on January 6 last year, was triggered by a dispute between the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/all-about\/labour-party\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">Labour<\/a>-run city council and Unite the union over the loss of the Waste Recycling and Collection Officer role.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Striking workers have raised concerns about pay while the Labour-run council\u2019s leadership has repeatedly insisted that a \u201cfair and reasonable\u201d offer had been made.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/news\/midlands-news\/how-birmingham-bins-strike-unfolded-33136247\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">12 months of turbulence<\/a>, marked by heaps of rubbish piling up during the height of the industrial action; several protests; angry interruptions during council meetings and unwanted headlines for the city.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Hopes of reaching a resolution through negotiations also faded last summer, when the council said it \u2018reached the absolute limit of what we can offer\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The industrial action has now dragged on into 2026, with Unite prepared to continue the strike beyond May\u2019s local elections this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Speaking after a council finance meeting today, refuse collector and Unite member Matthew Reid said the situation was \u201cdifficult for all of us\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cWe don\u2019t want the streets to be a mess, we don\u2019t want the people of <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">Birmingham<\/a> to suffer with no recycling, no garden collection, no bulky waste collection,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/0_JS389402071.jpg\" alt=\"Bins strike protesters in December 2025\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cWe can\u2019t understand why, for six months, [<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/all-about\/birmingham-city-council\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">Birmingham City Council<\/a>] can\u2019t just talk to us.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cIf we\u2019re so far apart [in their positions], we should be sitting around a table.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">On the prospect of the strike carrying on into the spring and summer, Mr Reid said: \u201cMyself and my members are absolutely determined to just carry on.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cThe way we\u2019ve been treated is disgusting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Asked what his message is to Brummies across the city, he added: \u201cI\u2019m embarrassed that a Labour council can\u2019t negotiate with a trade union to settle a waste dispute that should have been settled in July last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\"><strong data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cTogether we\u2019ve put them through six months of pain, distress, rats and fly-tipping and it\u2019s completely unnecessary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cWe should have stayed around the table and I can\u2019t believe the council pulled out of negotiations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Speaking at the finance meeting, Birmingham Council managing director Joanne Roney said negotiations had been \u201ccordial, polite and well managed on both sides\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">But she continued: \u201cWhat is clear for Birmingham City Council is in settling this dispute, it cannot worsen the equal pay implications for the council.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">She went on to say that there were also \u2018best-value\u2019 considerations that will be looked at by government-appointed commissioners, sent in to oversee the council\u2019s financial recovery.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" hurdles,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cNobody is blaming the workers for this situation \u2013 this is a failure of Birmingham City Council for many years to not address its equal pay issues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">She said two offers had been made to try and settle the dispute before being rejected by Unite, adding \u2018doors remain open\u2019 if the union wanted to make a proposal back.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Asked about Joanne Roney\u2019s remarks, bin worker Matthew Reid said: \u201cWell the doors are obviously not open.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cThey say their doors are open for us to go back and get that offer they\u2019ve offered us before, which we\u2019ve already rejected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cThey\u2019re just mounting more and more costs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">\u2018Only viable option\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The council\u2019s leadership has repeatedly faced calls to resume bins strike negotiations since last summer, with council leader John Cotton arguing last month that Unite had rejected a \u201csuccession of fair offers\u201d that had been put on the table.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201c[Unite] has asked us for stuff that frankly this council will not and cannot concede because it would reopen all of the challenges that we have faced over equal pay,\u201d he said. \u201cChallenges that we\u2019re bringing to a close.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cI would like to see this dispute brought to a close \u2013 but what I will not do is put at risk the financial viability of this council.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Meanwhile the commissioners wrote in their latest report: \u201cWith no negotiations taking place, and no credible basis for any being evident, the council has moved to resolve the matter by offering alternative arrangements to the workforce.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cThe majority have accepted one or other of these alternatives, but compulsory redundancy has had to be pursued in three cases.<\/p>\n<p><img data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cMaintaining this direction has required commendable fortitude in the face of frequent criticism and regular protest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">They added: \u201cWe have been supportive of this approach and
