in the affluent suburb of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Morningside,_Edinburgh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Morningside<\/a> have been felled by the City of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edinburgh.gov.uk\/parks-greenspaces\/trees-woodlands\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Edinburgh Council\u2019s Forestry Service<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Seven\u00a0trees, which line the residential Braid Avenue, have been described as either dead or defective by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deadlinenews.co.uk\/tag\/edinburgh-counci\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">council<\/a> spokesperson and will all be replanted.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The council\u2019s Forestry Service undertakes routine monitoring of trees in the city and often decide to remove dead or defective trees.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Residents of Braid Avenue expressed their anger at the\u00a0fellings, claiming that the trees contribute to the natural beauty of the area, and constitute a crucial part of the road\u2019s historic character.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.deadlinenews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/MORNIGHSIDE_CHERRY_TREES_DN01.jpg?ssl=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" data-dominant-color=\"727477\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #727477;\" fetchpriority=\"high\" yesterday on Braid Avenue (C) Jane Brown \/ Facebook<\/p>\n<p>During\u00a0spring, Braid Avenue, like many of the roads in\u00a0Morningside, sprouts a canopy of pink cherry blossom\u00a0from\u00a0the unique trees lining the avenue.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The trees are one of the defining features of Braid Avenue, and Morningside at large.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The forestry service arrived yesterday\u00a0with forestry equipment and woodchippers and cut down seven trees along the road.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Not all the trees along the route are cherry trees, however, and the council did not specify the species of the trees chopped down.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A council spokesperson said that seven \u201cdead or defective\u201d trees had been felled along Braid Avenue after routine monitoring.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They added that\u00a0all of\u00a0the trees will be replanted.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.deadlinenews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/MORNIGHSIDE_CHERRY_TREES_DN02.jpg?ssl=1\" recognisable feature in Morningside (C) Jane Brown \/ Facebook<\/p>\n<p>Following the visit by the forestry team, one Morningside resident expressed her anger\u00a0at\u00a0the removal of the trees on a local Facebook group.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She wrote:\u00a0\u201cThis morning, several cherry trees on Braid Avenue were felled by Edinburgh Council.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere appears to be no publicly available information on whether these trees will be replaced, when any replanting might take place, or what species would be used.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese cherry trees were an important part of the street\u2019s character and local environment in a conservation area.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is disappointing that Morningside residents have not been given clarity in advance or afterwards.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt would be helpful for the\u00a0council to confirm the reasons for the tree removal and to provide transparent information on any plans for replacement planting.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Other\u00a0locals, however, pointed out that many of the trees along the route had fallen over or were otherwise damaged.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There\u00a0are\u00a0long-delayed roadworks scheduled to begin later this year to add segregated cycle lanes to Braid Avenue, but the council said that the removal of the trees is entirely unrelated.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It is unclear when
