The ship was said to be registered in Guyana.<\/p>\n<p>The crew refused to allow it to be boarded and the vessel fled, during which time it re-registered as the Marinera in the Russian port of Sochi. Ship-tracking data from MarineTraffic showed the vessel nearing Iceland\u2019s exclusive economic zone on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>The ship began its journey in Iran and was bound for Venezuela to pick up oil,<\/strong> part of the so-called shadow fleet that moves oil for Russia, Iran and Venezuela despite US and allied sanctions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/world\/russia\/russia-sends-submarine-to-escort-tanker-the-u-s-tried-to-seize-off-venezuela-4bd78dc7?gaa_at=eafs&amp;gaa_n=AWEtsqed4J6HBWebdCDpkgOVTT75I_-s-L2vxQTOuF3EzCh9wYah6UCqE-f5eo-765o%3D&amp;gaa_ts=695e3f7f&amp;gaa_sig=w1zIOVD-RzpQV5LiPVpN5OC6BZu9ozlOjM_dvv6Qrw7opRQoCZWDOc_SuVer10xOZUBNAMNVLEdif3DZtghsgA%3D%3D\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wall Street Journal<\/a>, <strong>Russia on Wednesday dispatched a submarine and other naval vessels to escort the tanker,<\/strong> which is believed to be heading for <strong>Murmansk<\/strong> in northern Russia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">It remains unclear where the Russian navy could rendezvous with the ship, but <strong>the oil tanker\u2019s entry into European waters has coincided with the arrival of about 10 US military transport aircra<\/strong>ft and several helicopters in the UK.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In December, <strong>the vessel\u2019s crew repelled an attempted US boarding near Venezuelan waters<\/strong> before abruptly changing course and heading into the Atlantic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>The tanker was renamed Marinera, with its crew hastily painting a Russian flag on the hull,<\/strong> and it was added to an official Russian shipping registry. Moscow subsequently lodged a formal diplomatic protest demanding that Washington halt its pursuit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>The ship has been under sanctions by the US treasury since July 2024,<\/strong> accused by American authorities of being involved in carrying illicit cargo for a company owned by Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed Lebanese group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>Russia\u2019s state-run outlet RT earlier posted a video it said was filmed from the deck of the oil tanker,<\/strong> showing a US Coast Guard vessel trailing it. On Tuesday, Russia\u2019s foreign ministry said it was monitoring the situation \u201cwith concern\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Flight records show <strong>the Marinera appears to have been closely monitored over the last two days by US P-8 surveillance aircraft flying from RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk<\/strong> as it crossed the Atlantic. Photograph: Ludovic Marin\/AFP\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIf Europe acquiesces in US actions against the Maduro regime, it risks weakening the legal principles that underpin its opposition to Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine,\u201d said <strong>Alberto Alemanno,<\/strong> a professor of EU law, neatly <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/alemannoEU\/status\/2007506091546914922\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">summing up<\/a> the dilemma.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIf, however, it condemns those actions,\u201d Alemanno said, \u201c<strong>Europe risks alienating its primary security guarantor and straining transatlantic unity<\/strong> \u2013 at a moment when collective defence against Russia is especially critical.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Europe\u2019s leaders, who have heard <strong>Volodymyr Zelenskyy<\/strong> say a peace deal is \u201c90% ready\u201d and on Tuesday met the Ukrainian president and the US envoy Steve Witkoff in Paris to discuss US-backed postwar security guarantees for Kyiv, are desperate not to derail it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">More broadly, <strong>they are also keen to avoid antagonising a US president who has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/dec\/09\/trump-hints-walking-away-ukraine-calls-europe-weak-decaying\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">made no secret of his contempt for Europe<\/a><\/strong> <strong>and its leaders<\/strong> for fear of reviving trade tensions or undermining already withered US security guarantees to Europe generally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>The weak position this has left them in was on full display<\/strong> in the aftermath of Trump\u2019s Venezuela operation. In a statement, France\u2019s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/EmmanuelMacron\/status\/2007525386977194040\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Emmanuel Macron<\/a><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/EmmanuelMacron\/status\/2007525386977194040\" data-link-name=\"in body link\"> said<\/a> he would shed no tears for Maduro.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In an even more contorted response, the German chancellor, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/bundeskanzler\/status\/2007524831881810158\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Friedrich Merz,<\/a><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/bundeskanzler\/status\/2007524831881810158\" data-link-name=\"in body link\"> also stressed<\/a> Maduro\u2019s illegitimacy as Venezuela\u2019s leader \u2013 and added that \u201clegal assessment\u201d of the US raid was \u201ccomplex and requires careful consideration\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Italy\u2019s <strong>Giorgia Meloni<\/strong> went further, describing the attack as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.governo.it\/en\/articolo\/statement-palazzo-chigi-developments-situation-venezuela\/30686\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">legitimate\u201d self-defence<\/a>, while the European Commission president, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/vonderleyen\/status\/2007440364135674172\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Ursula von der Leyen<\/a><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/vonderleyen\/status\/2007440364135674172\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">, resorted<\/a> to the well-worn formula that the bloc was \u201cfollowing the situation closely\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A few leaders, most notably Spain\u2019s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/jan\/03\/colombia-sends-armed-forces-venezuela-border-concern-refugee-influx\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pedro S\u00e1nchez<\/a><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/jan\/03\/colombia-sends-armed-forces-venezuela-border-concern-refugee-influx\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">, were more outspoken<\/a>. Spain \u201cdid not recognise the Maduro regime\u201d, the Spanish prime minister said bluntly, \u201cbut neither will it recognise an intervention that violates international law\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">But <strong>the overall response came across as circumspect<\/strong> and was perhaps best characterised by the fact that Trump himself gleefully endorsed the French president\u2019s remarks, reposting them on his Truth Social network.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Was Europe\u2019s response right? <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2026\/jan\/06\/europe-venezuela-donald-trump-vladimir-putin\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nathalie Tocci<\/a><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2026\/jan\/06\/europe-venezuela-donald-trump-vladimir-putin\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> of Rome\u2019s Istituto Affari Internazionali argued forcefully<\/a> it was not. \u201c<strong>The more European countries act as colonies, unable and unwilling to stand up to Trump, the more they\u2019ll be treated as such,<\/strong>\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>Dr John Cotter<\/strong>, a researcher in EU constitutional law at Keele University, <a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/drjohncotter.bsky.social\/post\/3mblifwle222n\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was equally forthright<\/a>. European leaders who failed to condemn the US attack \u201cout of fear of provoking Trump\u2019s ire\u201d were missing two fundamental points, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cFirst, <strong>Trump clearly doesn\u2019t care what they think.<\/strong> Second, he couldn\u2019t hold them in more contempt anyway. In fact their mealy mouthed responses \u2026 will only heighten his contempt. European leaders might as well have shown some dignity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">There are signs, though, that <strong>European resolve may finally be hardening when it comes to Greenland<\/strong> \u2013 led by straight-talking Denmark.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">But \u2026 while their verbal rebuff of Trump\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/greenland\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Greenland<\/a> threats may be significantly stiffer than their responses to his Venezuela raid, <strong>no one is willing to say what actual steps the EU and its members may take were the US to attempt any kind of grab.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/mijrahman.bsky.social\/post\/3mbmcheyg3k2z\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mujtaba Rahman<\/a><\/strong> of the Eurasia Group risk consultancy warned:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" class=\"dcr-w9py1s\">\n<p>\u201cA possible US intervention in Greenland is the biggest source of risk to the transatlantic alliance, and to intra-Nato and intra-EU cohesion \u2013 arguably far greater than [the risk] presented by Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"mailto:?subject=Europe live: Russia reportedly deploys naval escort for oil tanker near Iceland&amp;body=https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/live\/2026\/jan\/07\/europe-greenland-denmark-us-france-trade-weather-latest-news-updates?CMP=share_btn_url&amp;page=with%3Ablock-695e2be98f08189717ef413d#block-695e2be98f08189717ef413d\" type=\"button\" class=\"dcr-1mulgdf\">Share<\/a>How a US takeover of Greenland would undermine Nato from within &#8211; analysis<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Dan-Sabbagh,-L.png\" alt=\"Dan Sabbagh\" class=\"dcr-lysqes\"\/>Dan Sabbagh<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Defence and security editor<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>The idea that one Nato country could attack another \u2013 a US invasion of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/greenland\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Greenland<\/a> \u2013 is so alien that the most famous article in Nato\u2019s founding treaty does not distinguish clearly what would happen if two of its members were at war.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a data-name=\"placeholder\" href=\"https:\/\/interactive.guim.co.uk\/uploader\/embed\/2026\/01\/greenland_globe\/giv-32554WyD5XpIaFGZV\/\" class=\"dcr-1eupayo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Map showing Greenland<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Article 5, the cornerstone of mutual protection, dictates that \u201can armed attack against one or more\u201d in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/europe-news\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Europe<\/a> or North America shall be considered \u201can attack against them all\u201d. Simple enough if the military threat comes from Russia, but <strong>more complicated when it comes from easily the alliance\u2019s most powerful member.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIf the US chooses to attack another Nato country, everything will stop,\u201d Denmark\u2019s prime minister, <strong>Mette Fredriksen<\/strong>, said on Monday. The military alliance may well continue to exist but <strong>its effectiveness will be called into fundamental question<\/strong>; the obvious beneficiary, an already aggressive Moscow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>There have already been several months of transatlantic uncertainty about Ukraine<\/strong> caused by two failed US efforts to force Kyiv, after the Alaska summit and again with the adoption of the Russian 28-point plan, to give up more territory as a precursor to the Kremlin even considering a ceasefire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>December\u2019s US national security strategy hectored Europe<\/strong>, with its extraordinary warning that the continent faced \u201ccivilizational erasure\u201d, partly because, within a few decades, \u201ccertain Nato members will become majority non-European\u201d. On that extreme basis, the strategy questioned if these unnamed countries would view their alliance with the US \u201cin the same way\u201d as did the 12 who founded Nato in 1949.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">If the diplomatic dance and the noises were not clear enough, then <strong>the re-emergence of the territorial lust for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/greenland\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Greenland<\/a> in the aftermath of the capture of Venezuela\u2019s Nicol\u00e1s Maduro has finally brought Nato itself sharply into focus,<\/strong> with the US explicitly challenging the historical sovereignty of Denmark, a fellow ally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>Nobody would realistically expect any of Nato\u2019s 31 other members to defend Greenland militarily if the US sought to seize it,<\/strong> a point <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/jan\/06\/stephen-miller-donald-trump-threats-take-over-greenland\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">emphasised by Trump\u2019s adviser Stephen Miller<\/a> overnight. The real world, he added, was \u201cgoverned by strength, that is governed by force, that is governed by power\u201d \u2013 not treaties or mutual support.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Nor would they have any hope of doing so. <strong>The US has 1.3 million active military personnel, across all its services; Denmark 13,100.<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nato.int\/content\/dam\/nato\/webready\/documents\/finance\/def-exp-2025-en.pdf\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nato figures show<\/a> the US was expected to spend $845bn on defence in 2025, the other 31 allies a combined $559bn. Photograph: Accorsini Jeanne\/ABACA\/Shutterstock<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The <strong>comments came just hours after a number of European allies issued a stern statement backing Denmark and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/greenland\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Greenland<\/a>,<\/strong> as they continue to oppose Donald Trump\u2019s plan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>Denmark<\/strong> held an emergency meeting of the foreign affairs committee last night to discuss its next steps.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Overnight, <strong>the Wall Street Journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/politics\/national-security\/rubio-tells-lawmakers-trump-aims-to-buy-greenland-downplays-military-action-5c94e05c\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> ($) that US state secretary Marco Rubio told lawmakers that Trump\u2019s preferred option was to buy Greenland from Denmark, and not invade it,<\/strong> but I am not entirely sure if that will convince anyone in Copenhagen about the merits of the proposal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">This morning, <strong>the French foreign minister Jean-No\u00ebl Barrot said that <\/strong>having spoken to US Rubio last night, <strong>he was also confident that a Venezuela-like scenario would not materialise in Greenland. <\/strong>For now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">But he confirmed that<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/france\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">France<\/a> was working with partners on a plan on how to respond should the US act on its threat to move to take over Greenland,<\/strong> with the issue expected to come up at today\u2019s ministerial meeting with his counterparts from Germany and Poland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Separately, <strong>I will keep an eye on EU talks on the Mercosur trade deal,<\/strong> which is back on the table today after a delay caused by some opposition from the likes of France and Italy, as the bloc looks to boost its international trade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Oh, and <strong>there are numerous winter disruptions across Europe,<\/strong> causing havoc with hundreds of flight cancellations and delays at the Schiphol airport in Amsterdam (more than 3,300 flights cancelled since last Friday, as <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/flightradar24\/status\/2008812926774419792\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">per Flightradar24\u2019s count<\/a>) and CDG in Paris, among others.<\/p>\n<p>People look at departures screens showing delayed and cancelled flights at Amsterdam Airport.
