On Tuesday, eight of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/europe-top-leaders-rally-defend-greenland-against-trump-threats-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Europe&#8217;s top leaders insisted<\/a> Greenland&#8217;s security must be ensured collectively by NATO and with full respect to the wishes of its people.<\/p>\n<p>Officials in Berlin said discussions on how to practically safeguard Greenland\u2019s sovereignty were ongoing on Wednesday following talks on the topic between European leaders and Denmark\u2019s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in Paris the day before.<\/p>\n<p>Germany&#8217;s Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul is working on a plan with his counterparts that could include European deterrence in the event the U.S. would try to attack or seize Greenland, as well as increased NATO presence in Greenland&#8217;s direct vicinity, a German government spokesperson said. Last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/france-fm-jean-noel-barrot-floats-sending-troops-to-greenland-denmark\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Barrot didn&#8217;t rule out<\/a> sending French troops to the island but it never materialized. <\/p>\n<p>The French minister tried to downplay the risks of American military aggression against Greenland, saying that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio assured him during a phone call earlier this week that it wasn&#8217;t Washington&#8217;s preferred way forward.<\/p>\n<p>However, the White House <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/01\/06\/trump-greenland-military-force-00713315\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said late Tuesday<\/a> it was still considering \u201ca range of options\u201d including the use of military force. <\/p>\n<p>Nette N\u00f6stlinger reported from Berlin.
