{"id":680310,"date":"2026-01-07T16:48:14","date_gmt":"2026-01-07T16:48:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/680310\/"},"modified":"2026-01-07T16:48:14","modified_gmt":"2026-01-07T16:48:14","slug":"call-to-halt-parking-charges-at-beauty-spots-and-district-centres","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/680310\/","title":{"rendered":"Call to halt parking charges at beauty spots and district centres"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"has-text-align-right\"><strong>By Don Mort,<\/strong> local democracy reporter<\/p>\n<p>City leaders will be asked to suspend parking charges at parks and town centres \u2013 including Horsforth \u2013 when councillors debate the issue.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cnegative impact\u201d of charges at parks including Roundhay and Golden Acre parks will be discussed at a Leeds City Council meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Alan Lamb, leader of the city\u2019s Conservative\u00a0group, has tabled a motion against the charges, introduced in February this year.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/348386441_796972581921144_1498852049559054364_n-900x675.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-136652\"  \/>Cllr Alan Lamb, Leader of Leeds Conservative group. Photo: LDRS<\/p>\n<p>The council has said the charges would fund better facilities at the parks and help address a multi-million pound budget gap.<\/p>\n<p>The motion said: \u201cThis council regrets the administration\u2019s decision to introduce car park charges in parks and district centres and the hugely negative impact this is having on local communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Coun Lamb, who represents Wetherby, said not enough cash was being raised to justify introducing the charges.<\/p>\n<p>The motion said the number of visitors to the parks had reduced since the charges were brought\u00a0in and people were choosing to park on nearby streets.<\/p>\n<p>It said: \u201cCouncil also notes that revenue collected from some car parks has been minimal, undermining the financial case for charging as a way of addressing the council\u2019s budget position.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Charges were brought in at places including Otley Chevin, Marsh Street in Rothwell, Netherfield Road in Guiseley and Barley Hill Lane in Garforth.<\/p>\n<p>Fink Hill, next to Horsforth Hall Park, Wilderness and Station Gardens in Wetherby, Middleton Park Bike Hub and Temple Newsam were also affected.<\/p>\n<p>The Labour-controlled council will debate Coun Lamb\u2019s motion at a meeting at Leeds Civic Hall on Wednesday (January 14).<\/p>\n<p>Drivers can pay \u00a34 per day at the parks or buy an annual season ticket for \u00a380, around \u00a31.50 a week.
