{"id":680340,"date":"2026-01-07T17:10:09","date_gmt":"2026-01-07T17:10:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/680340\/"},"modified":"2026-01-07T17:10:09","modified_gmt":"2026-01-07T17:10:09","slug":"france-and-germany-rush-to-counter-trumps-greenland-threats","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/680340\/","title":{"rendered":"France and Germany rush to counter Trump&#8217;s Greenland threats"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>On Wednesday, French Foreign Minister Jean-No\u00ebl Barrot stated that Paris is working with European allies on a joint response to U.S. President Donald Trump&#8217;s threats to take over <a href=\"https:\/\/news.az\/news\/european-leaders-reject-trumps-greenland-takeover-idea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Greenland<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Regardless of the form of intimidation and its source, we have begun work at the Quai d&#8217;Orsay to prepare ourselves to respond and not to respond alone,&#8221;\u00a0Barrot told French radio France Inter,<a href=\"https:\/\/news.az\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> News.Az<\/a> reports, citing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/france-germany-mull-european-response-to-trumps-greenland-threats\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Politico<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Once this work has been completed in the coming days, [we&#8217;ll] be able to share it. Whatever form intimidation takes, we want to take action with our European partners,&#8221; Barrot said, adding that he will discuss the topic later Wednesday during a meeting with his German and Polish counterparts.<\/p>\n<p>In recent days, Trump has reiterated his claims to Greenland \u2014 a self-ruling Danish territory \u2014 following a separate U.S. operation to capture Venezuelan President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro last weekend. On Tuesday, eight of\u00a0Europe&#8217;s top leaders insisted\u00a0Greenland&#8217;s security must be ensured collectively by NATO and with full respect to the wishes of its people.<\/p>\n<p>Officials in Berlin said discussions on how to practically safeguard Greenland\u2019s sovereignty were ongoing on Wednesday following talks on the topic between European leaders and Denmark\u2019s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in Paris the day before.<\/p>\n<p>Germany&#8217;s Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul is working on a plan with his counterparts that could include European deterrence in the event the U.S. would try to attack or seize Greenland, as well as increased NATO presence in Greenland&#8217;s direct vicinity, a German government spokesperson said.
