President Claudia Sheinbaum revealed on Wednesday that former attorney general Alejandro Gertz Manero would serve as Mexico\u2019s next ambassador to the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s going to Great Britain, to England,\u201d Sheinbaum told her morning press conference<\/a>.<\/p>\n She said that the United Kingdom has given its \u201cconsent\u201d to the appointment of Gertz as Mexico\u2019s ambassador, but noted that the Mexican Senate still has to approve it.<\/p>\n \u201cAfter [that] he would go. Later, we\u2019ll give you the date,\u201d Sheinbaum said.<\/p>\n Gertz, 86, resigned as federal attorney general in late November<\/a>, two years before his nine-year term was due to end. His almost seven years in the job were marked by controversy, including due to claims he misused his position for personal<\/a>\u00a0reasons.<\/p>\n Gertz was replaced by Ernestina Godoy<\/a>, who served as Sheinbaum\u2019s top legal advisor before becoming attorney general.<\/p>\n Former Sheinbaum advisor Ernestina Godoy sworn in as attorney general<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Various media outlets reported last year that Gertz would become Mexico\u2019s ambassador to Germany, but the government never confirmed that was the case.<\/p>\n \u201cSoon we\u2019re going to say where he\u2019s going because there has to be a process between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the [host] country,\u201d Sheinbaum said on Nov. 28<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cUntil the credentials are accepted, [the host country] can\u2019t be announced, that\u2019s a rule,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n If his appointment is approved by the Senate, Gertz will replace former environment minister Josefa Gonz\u00e1lez-Blanco Ortiz-Mena as Mexico\u2019s ambassador to the United Kingdom. She assumed her duties as ambassador in April 2021<\/a>.<\/p>\n Almost two years before that, Gonz\u00e1lez-Blanco resigned as environment minister after causing the delay of a commercial airline flight and triggering a backlash on social media<\/a>. She had been in the job for less than six months.<\/p>\n\n
