Picture date: Friday January 2, 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Each borough&#8217;s council manages and grits local roads and nearby pavements, usually prioritising main routes and hills.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/tfl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">TfL<\/a>\u2019s website confirmed that they manage and grit major A-roads like the A40 and A406.<\/p>\n<p>While there&#8217;s no legal obligation for people to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/news\/london\/councils-grit-roads-ice-cold-weather-b1258526.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">grit their own driveways<\/a>, it is strongly encouraged by government guidance to help prevent accidents on your property.<\/p>\n<p>Government advice encourages clearing paths as a community gesture, and you don\u2019t have to buy unique bags of salt to clear ice &#8211; table or dishwasher salt will do fine, and you only need to use a tablespoon per square metre to tackle ice.<\/p>\n<p>Salt will harm plants and grass, so be careful where you spread it, and if you don\u2019t have salt, sand or ash will do.<\/p>\n<p>Those public grit bins you see on the street?
