A 59-year old man has been arrested after a man was allegedly assaulted with a hammer in Newtownards. <\/p>\n

The PSNI said it received a report at around 12.35pm on Wednesday that a man in his 60s had been attacked in the Blenheim Drive area.<\/p>\n

Sergeant McLaughlin said it is understood the suspect assaulted the victim outside a block of flats using a hammer.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a result of the attack, the man sustained injuries to his head,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

They said the victim was taken to hospital for treatment and remains there at this time.<\/p>\n

A 59-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent, and possession of an offensive weapon with intent to commit an indictable offence.<\/p>\n

A police spokesperson added: \u201cHe remains in police custody as enquiries continue.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnyone who witnessed the assault or has information that could assist the investigation is asked to contact Police Service of Northern Ireland on 101, quoting reference number 520 of 07\/01\/26.<\/p>\n
