The fact that major transport links are open is significantly helping to ensure that people have access to the services and supplies they need.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;Work is now focusing to ensure that those who have experienced the most severe disruption, particularly the vulnerable, are being supported, with access routes and services reopened as soon as possible&#8230; Partners are continuing to work together to provide mutual aid where it is needed, including snow blowers, tractors and salt to <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/news\/scottish-news\/major-incident-declared-aberdeenshire-snowfall-36505837\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Aberdeenshire CouncilLink opens in a new tab.\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">Aberdeenshire Council<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Nearly 450 schools across several councils were shut on Wednesday with remote learning being used as an alternative where possible. In Aberdeenshire, all schools and council-run nurseries remained closed for a third day, along with dozens of schools in Moray and Aberdeen and a number of those in Orkney and Shetland.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/0_Winter-weather-Jan-7th-2026.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Snow outside Insch Co-op.(Image: PA)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Pupils in the Highlands were due to return from the holidays on Wednesday but many enjoyed an extra day off, with more than 120 schools shut due to the weather conditions. Aberdeenshire Council <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/news\/scottish-news\/snowed-scots-couple-hail-good-36514772\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"declared a major incident Link opens in a new tab.\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">declared a major incident <\/a>on Tuesday, warning of a \u201cgood chance\u201d some rural communities will be cut off, as well as the possibility of power cuts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The council said decisions on whether schools can open safely on Thursday will be made at local level following blanket decisions the last three days, though it expects this to be a \u201climited number\u201d. Network Rail Scotland said the vast majority of <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Scotland\u2019s Link opens in a new tab.\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">Scotland\u2019s <\/a>railway is open on Wednesday, though there were still \u201cchallenges due to deep snow\u201d between Inverness and Kyle of Lochalsh and Inverness to Wick\/Thurso.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The Kyle Line had reopened by around 2pm, Network Rail Scotland said.
