US Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the organizations as \u201canti-American, useless, or wasteful,\u201d adding that review of other organizations is still ongoing.<\/strong><\/p>\n \u2014<\/strong><\/p>\n The US is withdrawing from dozens of international bodies, conventions and treaties, including key climate treaties, that are \u201ccontrary to the interests\u201d of the country, President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday.<\/p>\n The list comprises 66 organizations \u2013\u00a035 non-United Nations organizations and 31 United Nations organizations \u2013\u00a0many of which conduct pivotal work on climate change. These include the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change<\/a>, the world\u2019s most\u00a0authoritative\u00a0scientific body on\u00a0climate change, the\u00a0International Union for Conservation of Nature, the global authority providing technical and policy advice to drive conservation, and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change<\/a> (UFCCC), the primary global treaty for coordinating international climate action. <\/p>\n It is the latest effort<\/a> by the Trump administration to distance the US from international organizations addressing climate change.<\/p>\n Full list of organizations from which the US is withdrawing (click to view)<\/p>\n Non-United Nations Organizations<\/strong><\/p>\n United Nations (UN) Organizations<\/strong><\/p>\n Established in 1992, the UNFCCC serves as the international structure for efforts\u00a0to slow down climate change, providing the foundations for key treaties including the Paris Agreement<\/a>, from which Trump has twice<\/a> withdrawn. It is one of the most widely subscribed international treaties, with 197 States and the European Union having ratified it. <\/p>\n Pulling out of the UNFCCC (the US is the first and only nation to ever do so) is \u201ca strategic blunder that gives away American advantage for nothing in return,\u201d David Widawsky, Director of the World Resources Institute US, said in a statement<\/a>. \u201cThe 30-year-old agreement is the foundation of international climate cooperation. Walking away doesn\u2019t just put America on the sidelines \u2013 it takes the US out of the arena entirely.\u201d<\/p>\n Trump said<\/a> \u201cit is contrary to the interests of the United States to remain a member of, participate in, or otherwise provide support to\u201d these organizations, and instructed all executive departments and agencies\u00a0\u201cto take immediate steps to effectuate the withdrawal \u2026 as soon as possible.\u201d He has used the same argument to justified previous withdrawals from international bodies including<\/a> the World Health Organization, the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, known as UNRWA, the UN Human Rights Council and UNESCO.<\/p>\n Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the organizations as \u201canti-American, useless, or wasteful,\u201d adding that review of other organizations is still ongoing. \u201cWe will stop subsidizing globalist bureaucrats who act against our\u00a0interests,\u201d he said in a social media post<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u2018New Low\u2019<\/p>\n Several international organizations have expressed shock and anger at the move. Rachel Cleetus, Policy Director and Lead Economist for the Climate and Energy Program at the Union of Concerned Scientists, called it<\/a> a \u201cnew low\u201d and \u201canother sign that this authoritarian, anti-science administration is determined to sacrifice people\u2019s well-being and destabilize global cooperation.\u201d Gina McCarthy, the White House climate adviser during the Biden administration, described the decision as \u201cshortsighted, embarrassing, and foolish.\u201d<\/p>\n While hurting the US, Widawsky remains optimistic that \u201cglobal climate diplomacy will not falter.\u201d <\/p>\n \u201cOther nations understand the UNFCCC\u2019s irreplaceable role in driving cooperation and advancing climate solutions the world urgently needs.
