Pro-EU prime minister Keir Starmer is starting a year marking a decade since the Brexit vote by pushing for \u201ceven closer alignment\u201d with the EU\u2019s single market and promoting a \u201cyouth mobility scheme\u201d that would amount to a return of free movement<\/a>\u2014effectively betraying the decision of Britons to leave.<\/p>\n

Reports this week suggest the UK is preparing to enter \u201cdynamic alignment\u201d with the European Union in several areas, some agreed last year<\/a>. This will allow Brussels rules to take effect automatically in Britain, without approval from MPs.<\/p>\n

The Telegraph described<\/a> this as \u201cthe first loss of UK sovereignty on standards since Brexit,\u201d adding<\/a> that the Labour government\u2019s EU deal \u201cis the worst of all worlds.\u201d<\/p>\n

There has also been some pushback from Nigel Farage\u2019s Reform party. Trevor Lloyd-Jones, the party\u2019s vice-chair for Aldershot, bashed<\/a> the plans as a \u201cdisgrace,\u201d adding:<\/p>\n

Starmer\u2019s really going to do it, he\u2019s going to overturn Britain\u2019s most important democratic decision in a generation.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Reform\u2019s Bracknell branch jibed<\/a> that Starmer is \u201cunlikely\u201d to be PM by the time these plans come into force, although \u201cwe will have another Europhile in his place, unfortunately.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDynamic alignment\u201d could lock Britain into Brussels\u2019 net zero rules, regardless of Parliament\u2019s wishes. Reports warn<\/a> that EU decisions could also reshape UK law on food standards, pesticide use, and animal welfare.<\/p>\n

On the last of these points, Conservative frontbencher Andrew Griffith noted<\/a> that \u201cEU standards are lower than the UK\u2014why would Labour want that?\u201d He added that Net Zero Secretary Ed Miliband \u201cis doing a perfectly good job of ruining British manufacturing with high energy costs without needing more help from Brussels.\u201d<\/p>\n

Former Margaret Thatcher aide Nile Gardiner said<\/a> Starmer \u201cis surrendering to Brussels.\u201d Not that there was ever any doubt that he would do this<\/a>. Though it is debatable whether the Tories would have done much better<\/a> had they won the last general election.<\/p>\n
