Allergies can be a serious thing, with some of the most serious allergies leading to death if they\u2019re not managed swiftly and properly.<\/p>\n
So when you have an allergy \u2013 especially a food allergy \u2013 it\u2019s absolutely vital that you let anyone you\u2019ll be dining with know well ahead of time.<\/p>\n
This allows for everyone to plan accordingly, whilst also keeping you safe.<\/p>\n
But all allergy sufferers know this, right?<\/p>\n
Unfortunately for the Thanksgiving host in this story<\/a>, his sister-in-law didn\u2019t tell him about her allergy until he was literally cooking the meal.<\/p>\n Read on to find out why he found this highly suspicious.<\/p>\n My parents gave up wanting the responsibility of making a Thanksgiving meal about five years ago.<\/p>\n My house is big enough to host and I enjoy cooking, so for the past three years the duties have fallen to me.<\/p>\n I make the turkey, the stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy and rolls. Others bring sides and things like chips and drinks.<\/p>\n And this year, my brother and his wife came into town early and stayed over.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n But this year, something seriously odd was going on.<\/p>\n Mid-morning on Thanksgiving, my sister-in-law wandered into the kitchen while I\u2019m making stuffing. She saw my pile of breadcrumbs, celery, onion and sausage in a bowl, and me saut\u00e9ing mushrooms.<\/p>\n She said, \u201cWhat are THOSE for?\u201d I told her they were for the stuffing. She put her hands on her hips and said, freaking out, \u201cYou can\u2019t put mushrooms in the stuffing. I\u2019m allergic!\u201d<\/p>\n I was stupefied. I said, \u201cWhen did this happen?\u201d<\/p>\n And she just looked at me like I was an idiot, so I said, \u201cWhen did you discover you\u2019re allergic to mushrooms?\u201d<\/p>\n She scoffed and said, \u201cI\u2019ve always been allergic.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Uh-oh. This was news to her brother-in-law.<\/p>\n Now the thing is, when I make my stuffing I like things to be well incorporated, and I always chop the mushrooms small after I saut\u00e9 them. So they\u2019re not actually apparent in the mix as mushrooms among the other ingredients.<\/p>\n I burst out in a laugh and said, \u201cWell, that\u2019s interesting, because you weren\u2019t allergic last year. And you weren\u2019t allergic the year before.\u201d<\/p>\n She asked me what I meant, and I told her I\u2019d been making stuffing like this every year she\u2019s eaten it, and furthermore she\u2019s raved over it, and had zero allergic reaction.<\/p>\n So maybe she\u2019s not allergic. Maybe she just thinks she doesn\u2019t like mushrooms.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Yikes! Things did not go well from there.<\/p>\n She got mad and went to my brother to tell him, and she told him she wanted to leave \u2013 but he wanted to stay. So she spent the entire rest of the day shooting daggers at me with her eyes.<\/p>\n They were supposed to stay through the weekend but they left Thanksgiving night.<\/p>\n I confided in my mom and my sister yesterday and they kind of chuckled and said it\u2019s not my fault, but my brother texted me this morning that I could have just not used the mushrooms, and that I made his wife feel stupid for no reason.<\/p>\n I maintain I didn\u2019t make her feel anything.<\/p>\n AITA?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n It\u2019s clear that her mushroom allergy can\u2019t have been severe, since she\u2019s unknowingly been eating mushrooms in the Thanksgiving dinner year after year with no side-effects \u2013 and what\u2019s more, she hasn\u2019t told anyone about this allergy until now.<\/p>\n But the way that he handled the situation wasn\u2019t particularly sensitive either, and suggesting that he \u2018didn\u2019t make her feel anything\u2019 is really invalidating.<\/p>\n This is a really messy situation, and someone has to back down.<\/p>\n Let\u2019s see what the Reddit community made of this.<\/p>\n This person agreed that if she was allergic, she should have mentioned something previously.<\/p>\n While this Redditor pointed out that she didn\u2019t have to eat the stuffing.<\/p>\n And others stuck up for him, saying she was the one in the wrong here.<\/p>\n Of course, people can develop allergies over time \u2013 but this would have surely been something she would have told the family about.
